school vs social improvement

last september son started new school with gifted children. he also started seroquel. he has developed a MAJOR interest in music. with this hobby he socializes at school with staff and students at school. there has been very little increase in socialization outside of school, but still there has been some increase. he is respectful and "a joy in the music class". yes i'm pleased. his quality of school work seems to have slipped a little. i'm not too concerned. i think the tradeoff of decent grades including conduct and some better social skills is better than the A's he used to get in school subjects and the poor conduct grades. the music is also a more tolerable choice of obsession than some of the ones he has had in the past. anyone else see lower grades but better social skills?

Yeah, with Cait. Last report card she got C's and mostly B's which isn't bad. She tends towards those 2 with a smattering of F's. Currently this grading period (final of the year and always her hardest) she is pulling pretty much straight F's.
It has been like this since entering middle school. But her social skills have grown exponentially.
I think it is a combination of things.
1) she found an interest as well (volunteering at REINS horsebackriding) and being there really helped her come out of her shell and this is transferring to school as well. NO friends at home yet but definitely more social and a "joy to have in class" at school and
2) Her cognitive challenges due to autism are finally catching up with her in middle school. There is more focus on independent work, being able to organize and higher level comprehension skills which just escape our ASD kiddo's as they get older. Suddenly work is more about inferencing and problem solving than memorizing. They have to be all kinds of organized to keep all thier stuff straight. If it wasn't for the aide support she has she would be getting straight F's all the time. And she always tested very high before.
