LR

beautiful girls! Thanks for sharing!

Weston has the deer in the headlights look too. He also has always had a horrible time w/ having photos taken, he wants to smile (because that's what you're supposed to do in photos-- at least school pictures), but he's never quite known how to smile. He always looks like he has a horrible grimace on his face, or like he's growling at the camera. This year he started understanding jokes and the photographer at school told him a joke and took the pic at just the right time so he has a more "real" smile.

When Weston was about 9 months old we started having him evaluated by a opthamologist (sp?) due to his eyes not being quite right. The only thing they could figure out was that they were a bit too widely spaced and told us that he'd probably be VERY tall and sometimes young children who will be very tall have eyes widely spaced? esp those of Scandinavian origin (he is) and they kept an eye on it until he was 5.

I also have a friend whose son has AS and he has the deer in the headlights look too-- and has the smile difficulties as well. I find it interesting that lots of kids w/ ASD we know have the grimace or growl look in school photos.

LR, gorgeous girls!

I know Malcolm has had deer in headlight that look in school photos when he was younger and I always thought that was mostly because of the bright lights and anticipating the flash! He doesn't look that way in snapshots done in the park by one of his best pal's moms with no flash or bright lights.

Now he looks pretty relaxed and generally OK in school photos, last year even a little silly but good.

Betsy, my son is also partly of Norwegian descent (my side of family) and he is already a head and a half taller than other kids his age! And his eyes are slightly widely spaced, but so are the eyes of all of dh's family.

That is very interesting.

Though I haven't noticed the deer in the headlights look, the kids tend to either be really stiff or goofy in pictures. Mike really dislikes flashes and just started in the last year or 2 to be more compliant/easier to take a picture.

As for the dialated pupils, that is interesting. This week when Mike went to the eye doctor he looked into his eyes and he said he didn't really have to dialate them because they were already pretty dialated. THough this guy specializes in ASD's and didn't mention that this was common. I go myself this week. I may ask.

BTW, LR - The kids are gorgeous!
