Tina,
Well, I've just been doing this for about 1 1/2yrs now. I still question if I'm doing enough too. I do, however, think it's great that your ds can tell you about things, like his cartoons. Especially at his age. My ds is 6 1/2 and won't offer info on anything unless I ask. And even then I don't always get an answer. He will sporatically tell me things, but then I have to figure out what he's talking about. There are days where I can get more out of him than other days, but it's not consistant.
He seems to be getting alot at preschool, from what you wrote. The one thing I do, in addition to school, is do lots of talking at home. (which I'm probably sure you already do!). I ask him questions all the time, help him to answer, and give him things to say...options. Multiple choice. I'll ask a question, and then if he doesn't answer, I give him a couple of possible replies and then he will choose one as his answer. Now, he sometimes says no to both of "my" choices, and he gives me HIS answer. So he's improved alot. I've been told that speech does take awhile, but with time, you will see improvements. My son wasn't really even talking til 3-3 1/2yrs of age, and he's made lots of improvements throughout the last 3yrs. He hasn't caught up to his peers, but he's on the right track. I know that with time, therapy, and tons of practice at home....we will get there. I know that he may always have some difficulty, but I do try to stay optimistic! It's a nonstop job for me. Working on his speech...we work on this everyday. I don't set aside time or anything, I just incorporate it into our daily life.

I don't think there is any right answer to your question. There are so many options and every child is different. For my kids we've been very happy with the improvements from supplements, physical/sensory therapy, & theraputic listening.
