I had 2 school emails last night. I opened all my fun stuff first then waited for the kids to go to bed before I opened those 2 cause I didn't want to deal w/ anything last night-- I had a really hard day by myself w/o having to deal w/ autism and it's entourage.
so, one was from the social studies teacher letting me know that she's trying to get Weston's class caught up and that she'd added a page of homework, thank you very much for the head's up.
The 2nd was just Weston's grade book pg from the Language Arts teacher, basically stating that he's failing Language Arts. no message no explanation. I'm fed up. She feels that he's not doing homework and not participating in her class willfully. I didn't want him in the honors class in the first place but they insisted that was where he belonged. I really don't want Weston to see his grades when his report card comes home-- he'll be heartbroken. I don't quite understand how to get it through to them that they have to approach him as a 5 year old, not a 11/12 yr old. And yet, that's not even exactly how to approach him. I just want him out of that class-- but they have to try everything to be sure LRE is exactly what he's getting. (meanwhile the kid is getting more and more used to doing nothing).
ok, vent over, please go back to your regularly scheduled board viewing, LOL!

Betsy.
In all fairness to this teacher, she does care. She does want to help, she just doesn't really listen or things aren't relayed to her in a way that works. And she's getting the worst end of Weston's day. His least favorite subject+ too many different 'unrelated' areas w/i the same class (literature, Latin/Greek stems, spelling, grammar, writing) at the end of a very difficult day+ a HUGE class of very disruptive boys+ the push to be the highest Language Arts class in the best district in the state= too much for my guy. Factor in not enough training and education for general ed teachers and the fact that Weston is the first child like him to go through this part of the system (South Carolina is way behind/conservative in special ed anything) and knowing that all autistic children are very different. She's not solely to blame.
I'm just really frustrated, the kid knows the material and yet somewhere the connections aren't there. The supports aren't enough or something. He's failing miserably.

Betsy,
I am very sorry that he is failign this class, but that might be what ot takes to get them to place him more appropriatey. It would be unfortunate, but sometime you have to give soem ground to gain soem ground, you know?
I was reading all the factors from your previous post, and OMG you guys have been up against so much. Especially cosidering that he is the first kid of his kind in this school system, it is a huge testament to you both that he is doing so well overall.
