SO PROUD OF HIM!!!

Well, I just am so proud of my boy that I could bust! This day has been a long time in coming. Today Malcolm played his opening day game of Little League, where all the rules applied and the runs were counted, etc. and he did just terrific! In the weeks leading up to today, he has had several months of baseball private coaching and a few practise seesions and practise games with his team. He has had breakdowns, tried again, had breakdowns, studied the rules, worked harder, practised his skills. And so far, I have had to run out on the field to help him off the bases when he is out, usually.

Last night he was very nervous about how he would do today. I told him to do his best, and let's make the goal that, should he get out today, he should be able to calmly walk off the field BY HIMSELF and find a way to be fine with it. Today, he struck out once, popped one way high that got caught as he neared first base ... and both times, he calmly walked off the field and into the dugout like he'd been doing it that way all his life. I almost wept with joy.

AND he slammed one to second base, got run in, hit another grounder to first base, got run in ... and his team whomped the other team 17 - 9. A few of the kids on his team of 8-year-olds are so good, they should be being scouted for the Majors. And they are very nice kids, encouraging, fun, lots of cheering for all their teammates. It was a terrific game, and I think he is still awake in there under the covers, smiling...

3 years ago, he couldn't stand baseball. I let him quit. Step by step, he is finally learning how to play competitive sports. And now, over 2 weeks on the Zoloft, I think we have found the piece that will really let him use those huge competitive feelings, harness his gifts and really let him participate. I suspect we are really seeing an athlete in the making. He just doesn't give up!

OK, I'll stop bragging. I just think I won't be able to sleep for a long time tonight, either! Wooooohooooo!!!

Sara......that is just sooooo great! I'm floating here with you with a big smile on my face too.

Sam wants so much to play sports but just gets a little wild with the competetive part.....he starts hitting etc when an opposing team mate does well or trash talks. He wants so much to play but he just doesn't have the focus, impulse control, social skills or understanding of turn taking and rule following yet to really function in a game. He's doing pretty badly in gym because of this too.

But.....with work, maybe someday he will be able to join a team.
