So when did we get the Autism Speaks ad?

Darn thing popped up huge when I logged in tonight. So I take a wander over to their website and there is the autism every day video and a video glossary of autism. I kind of have a problem with this.
I had this discussion with a good friend recently. The idea of posting video's of our kids being autistic and posting them. I know I have posted a couple of Mike but I make them with horrible tags or none so they aren't searchable. Then they are for friends only and I am only leaving them temporarily and putting them on private.
My thought is this. We need to be sensitive that our kids are their own people. How are they going to feel in the future if they are used as video guinea pigs. Kind of takes the humaness out of those kids. They become "autism" rather than being first a child.
going to take my video down now as I realize I have left it up longer than I had intentioned and this is bugging me again.
It is one thing if they are adults or someone who gave consent but I am relatively sure these kids did not give consent just as i would bet the child in the autism every day video would be thrilled to hear her mom fantasize about killing her.

Great, thought provoking post renee! I have something on nicholas on utube, but tony never put autism or aspergers, or tourettes for a search word. We just put things like kid, amusement park ect....
The troll I got was from another board who probably has read whats going on with my boys, and it doesn't matter to me cuz that person doesn't make sense. No one can really tell ya know?
Anyway it was funny as nicholas was on Tony's computer and found a youtube link at the bottom, opened it up and was laughing hilariously because he realized he was on youtube lol. He has been searching on it for spongebob stuff lol.
So maybe you can still post the videos without using the catagory's? I think knowing and searching for things that are autistic help me, but with us, we can put them in different catagories and just post them to friends or board buddies that can understand...?
I enjoy seeing your video's as I can relate in some of them. It helps me.
I made a video of Chris the other night perservering on his business plan and I want to post it, but I won't post it as autism. I will find another catagory and maybe post it privately here.
I'm still trying to learn this software tho lol. It may take forever to do this!

I think the difference is that we are putting up video for friends of our kids as they are, kwim? So I am sharing a video of my kids with my friends. Some of what I am sharing is the good sweet stuff and some is different. You won't see me post something like a full meltdown though. I think that is hurtful to the kids and something they certainly wouldn't want shared.
The difference for me is that with using children as a video glossary is that they become things not children. A tool for showing autism. Then the autism becomes more about what the child is than their personhood.
I have expressed my feelings here about autism speaks in the past and perhaps that makes me more sensitive to the whole thing but it is weird that I just had a conversation with a freind about this probably 2-3 weeks ago.

Oh I absolutely agree with you with what your saying. If I ever video tape a meltdown, it will only be for the sake for showing a doctor. That I would never post to anyone anywhere because its just not right.
The business thing tho I think is so sweet lol. Plus I can show him once he's older when he's a famous entrepreneur lol.
You know do you think Autism Speaks is spamming people who post video's in those catagories? IF so, thats just not right.
