Can't hurt to look and be creative. You can also see if there is anything offered through the school with his new IEP. The one I REALLY want to do right now is a social group for teens on the spectrum through the music therapy place. They also have it for younger kids but this band they have for the older kids I think would be the best but only if I can get it funded.
Cait and Mike have always had social skills through school. For outside social skills I found a clinical psych that specializes in ASD's and she does small peer play sessions with the kids (or did for a long time for Cait and still does for Mike).
You are right our kids REALLY need social skills support, BUT I would ask around other parents and see what the success rate from this program actually is. There are a million places that offer social skills training but there is no regulating body so who knows if a program is actually good. What curriculum are they using? What are the other alternatives?
Is there a state agency for people with special needs? Do they have anything through that that he would qualify for? Most states have some sort of support services.
Hard decision I know. There are many things I would love to provide for the kids that they really need but only so much we can afford on 1 teacher salary so I have had to get creative.

I pay $50 for a 75-minute social skills group for DS.

That's the going rate here, actually it's better than the going rate here as we only get one hour sessions. I have never done social skills groups per se, but I have looked into it.
They get us coming and going. And our insurance covers nothing, bupkus.

Pricing sounds about right from here in Miami too. We pay $45 for a one hour session, similar to what you described. One ST and One OT lead the group of 4-5 kids who have similar dx and skill level and age. Our insurance covers medical things, like neuro visits, drugs but does not cover OT, ST, ABA etc.
But more important than cost, I think, is do you like the people and the place? What do other parents say? Eric is just 4 and we are just starting with social skill group things. I find I like the "big name/medical/clinical" center where he gets his medical services, one on one OT and ST.
But for social skills, sports, pragmatics, I really like the smaller parent-owned and run center setting. The owner had 25 yrs. as an ST herself and 4 kids on the spectrum. Her oldest are in college now. She has kind of grown the social skills groups around her own kids and I find it to be right on so far, though we just started.
Price sounds ok in your case for a major metro area, but I would say shop around and talk to other parents, as I know you would anyway.

I have to agree that it sounds about right and to be honest pretty reasonable considering we pay one of Jakes therapists $60 per hour and she cut us a break because she worked with him in E.I and is using him as one of her case studies for certification in DIR. Having a kid with an ASD is not cheap!

You guys are lucky. There are NO social skills groups around here, and by around I mean in a 50 mile radius. I couldn't believe the therapy center the kids used to go to didn't have one. When I asked they looked at me like they'd never even heard of it before. Kyle had a social skills group though school last yr such as it was. It did help even though there were no goal or specific skills they were working on. You might think this is nuts but we saw the most social gains from anti-viral therapy.
Samantha
That seems very reasonable to me. One hour social skills therapy is $50 here and they also don't accept insurance. However, even if they did accept insurance, my insurance won't cover it.
We are lookingat all these expenses too. We are looking at $15 co-pay twice a week for speech. $15 co-pay twice a week for OT. The bad news is that co-pay will be going up to $25 on Sept 1st. My goal is to get an IEP in force to include OT and Speech and then we would pay for the social skills therapy.

hey so far we have been lucky in that Joshs has been getting a social skills group through his school. I am still waiting for our Updated IEP meeting to see what else our school district offers us now that Josh has an offical dx of Asperger's,
I know of a center here that also offers social skills groups but I know our plate is too full right now to add anything else.
Josh is in Boy Scouts, which has been a positive experience for him and we have been lucky with his pack when he was in cubs in that there were other boys with simliar issues in the pack. Plus Josh's den was small and his leaders we able to acccomadte him(pre dx one leader has spe ed background and often said Josh behaved better than the regular kids). And know that Josh moved up to Boy Scouts we have been lucky. And he has an older guy to look up to. I mentioned a 19y.o. with more severe ASD than josh who just got his Eagle Scout. And Josh did very well for himself at scout camp earned 2 merit badges, plus a patch for going to jewish services. What amazed me that day was on the 1st day, was some of the boys in his group were appareently on some form of medication, from Concerta to allergy stuff so Josh was not alone with issues.
Josh has also been going to Hebrew School. And josh has been picking up hebrew very well. Again other kids in the group at least one other boy has issues in his group. But I also met another family who has I beleive either has HFA or Asperger's and will be getting his Bar Miztvah. But Thr boy seems a little older than 13.
I guess for me i have seen those as Josh's social skills groups to an extent. He seems to be out going but still very talkiative.
I guess this is an on going learning experience for me.
