Some of you may know that my Matthew was diagnosed with high functioning autism just this spring. Since then I have days of "nah, he's just fine" and some very "A" days. I feel like we've been floating in limbo since school ended. I feel like we got his diagnosis and were sent out to sea.
Long story short. We just fell into this social skills group that is part of the local school of medicine autism support program. They only hold them for Matthew's age group once every year or 2 for 5-6 weeks and I found out about it Thursday. It started Monday. When told about the "friends group" Matthew said, "there is no way you are getting me to go to that, unless maybe you paid me!"
Anyway, he went, very hesitantly, but without a cash exchange. When I went to pick him up the mothers in the waiting room were talking about things that were way more involved than Matthew is. I worried that we were way off base and in the wrong place.
So, when Matthew comes out laughing and talking to the other kids I was so happy! When I asked him how it went he said, "Mom, they were kids just like me. So we got along great!"
I cried. Hope for good friendships, hope for real happiness, but just a little sad that we really do fit after all. My Matthew is some kid!

((((((Kara)))))),
I totally understand how you feel! "Belonging" is kind of a mixed bessing in these situations. While it is nice to belong *somewhere*,
