Start of school delayed for us

This is insane!!! Friday evening, I received word from our principal that the start of school for our elementary school (not the other 5 in the district) will be delayed, due to construction. And do we know for how long?? NO!! We are on a day-to-day basis, just waiting and watching to see when we go!

Our district has been remodeling and doing construction on most of the schools this summer. Ours is getting the most done, I believe, and the contractors have fallen behind with the asbestos clean-up. (The high school is delayed for one day in their start because of failing their fire and safety inspections yesterday) The problem is, once they are done with the clean-up and have the school in a student-ready condition, the school still has to make itself resource-ready -- alot of our equipment, books, etc., are being stored in a school gymnasium across town!! That will take a few days in itself!

So, basically, we were to start on Sept. 3, and now we have no idea when the first day of school will actually be. Isn't it grand?? As you can imagine, Tristan is NOT happy about this at all, and the entire concept of "day-to-day" just really passes him by. He now thinks that he isn't going to school this year. UUUUUUUUUGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!

You're right, that IS insaine! If the district ever thinks of using that contractor again in the future, remind of this and what happened this time. the parents and teachers must be frustrated beyond belief, I can't (don't) want to even thionk about what all the kids are going through. It's probably causing a lot of confusion for everyone.

But my next question, after 'when does school actually start', would be 'when will school end'? Remember, all these days that were missed at the begining of the year will be tacked on to the end. Those poor kids, having to try and figure all that out. Consistancey and reliability is important to all kids, not just Aspies. It just makes it worse that there are Aspies having to endure this too. I know when I don't start a new school mod exactly on the day I tell Jade that I'm going to she does the Aspie Twitch for a few weeks. We started a new one yesterday and almost didn't, but THAT is a different thread....

I'm sorry Tristan (and you) have to put up with this. Maybe you can take him down to the school so he can see the workmen and explain what they are doing and that this is the reason school is delayed? Maybe if he sees things going on you can mentally walk him through the process of construction, clean-up, set-up, etc? Of course, I suppose that would work best if there was scaffolding and such up thathe could see, and if thy're almost done it maybe down by now. BUT (warning: incoming thought, lol) if you can take him around and show him the things that are different about the school you might be able to say "See all the wonderful things they did? Now they are doing the little details. When they're done with that they'll clean-up and be done. THEN the teachers can come in and put the books away and get the school nice and neat for you so school can start. They'll let us know when they are ready." Okay, that was just a thought, LOL.

I hope they get the school back up and running as quickly as posible. In the mean time take a deep breath and have some chocolate.....give Tristan some too. *wink*

Peace,

Candes

Don't have much time, getting ready to babysit the neighbor kid. But......

School is only being delayed ONE DAY!!!! WooHoo!!!!!! They start tomorrow, and they couldn't be happier!! They realized once they got in there to actually start the cleaning that it wouldn't take nearly as long as they had initially thought, so everything is up and ready and only one day behind....and should NOT affect the end of the year at all!!

Yippie.......they go back tomorrow!!!!!!!!!!

That's great, Carrie. I don't know why, but i had vissions of them delaying for like 2-3 weeks. I guess because one of the schools around here did that a few years ago...talk about chaos.

Anywho, glad they are getting back to school with only a day's delay. You can can call it a 'Teacher Work Day' or something, lol.

Peace,

You know, your visions about 2-3 week delays weren't all that far off.......that's exactly what we were fearing around here!!!

Kids are so psyched, and even told us that since it is a school night, they have to go to bed earlier. YaHoo!!!!!!
