Starting to think food intolerance....

Kyle had another melt down today. He wasn't self-injurous so they didn't call me. He calmed down eventually and went back to class. They took ITBS tuesday and today & both days he had a melt down afterward seeming out of the blue. Monday & Wednesday no meltdowns. They can't figure out what set him off today. They say he's breezing though the ITBS and is not stressed about them at all. They also recognized the pre-meltdown behaviours and did all the right things but they didn't work.

But they get a snack when they take ITBS which he usually doesn't have at school. At home he takes enzymes with all meals and snacks and also with lunch at school. They didn't give him an enzyme with his snack because I didn't think to have the doctor put that in the letter to the nurse. The snack was cookies and orange juice. He NEVER drinks orange juice or eats oranges. I wonder if he is intolerant to orange. If not my other theory is the juice makes his blood sugar spike and then he crashes and melts. So I'm going to send bottled water with him for tomorrow and call the nurse and see if she'll agree to give him an enzyme with snacks.

Hopefully I'm on to something here. I wanted to hold out for 2 weeks to give the new interventions a go before changing his programing. But I don't know if I can hold out.

Well, there is also that sugar issue and how our kids process it or don't. Orange juice has alot of sugar and high glycemic type stuff. Add that to a cookie when he is in a stressful situation and it may not be helpful.

Even if one doesn't believe fully in the sugar type thing, I know personally that if I need energy to think and work a high sugar snack is the WORST thing to do. High protein/fiber yes, sugar no.
