Stim or tic?

At which point do we say a stim has become a tic? I ask as Liam's stims have come and gone over the years, (lip licking is a big one, as is the echoing), however, it is now getting far worse. He is turning as he walks (spins once when changing directions), he echoes everything back to himself under his breath, several times too. He is head jerking (looking suddenly to the left or right 2-3 times quickly). And he's shoulder shrugging again. He is also has some vocal stims/tics "uh huh."

I'm so lost here; do we go back to the pdoc or the neurologist? He had an EEG done a year ago and it came back fine. Our biggest change as you know is he is now down to a quarter mg of risperdal. Perhaps it was doing something, but honestly it wasn't enough to wether the side effects anyway. So, when is it a stim, when is it a tic? And what the HELL DO I DO NOW?????

Well imo those sound like tics to me as I frequent a Tourette's board and those are very commen for my friends kids to have.

I have never stopped his stimming/ticcing unless it was harmful, (whish granted is a rarity). I am concerned moreso as they are getting worse, and I do think it is affceting his interaction with others, school etc. They are statrting to mainstream him this wee (slowly 30 mins twice a week with a parapro, but I worry how his peers will react to his ticcing. It's hard enough just being Liam on a "normal" day kwim?

Thanks though, gives me an idea what is going on now; I do think they are tics too.

Thanks for the question. I'd been wondering myself. Ds was on Concerta for a week and starting stim/tic-ing a LOT, and I wasn't sure what to call it. It sounds like it was probably tics. I'm glad you asked!

My DS also has TS & has several tics at one time. There is usually a vocal one, at the moment it is kinda like 'uh' constantly. He also has a little hop to his step, appears to be drawing a circle in front of his face
