Mike just started back to school this week and we have weaned him off the trileptal. For him the Tri. was supposed to help behaviors but it didn't or made them worse as we increased so I dc'ed them.

Well today I go into school and teacher tells me he is suddenly having a really hard time doing the work and understanding the work. They can't get him started on projects and wondered what was going on at home. Only the med change. He worked diligently on his homework last night and it took 3 hours. It took him 1 1/2 hours to do an easy spelling sheet and math sheet which should have combined taken him about 10-20 minutes.

I made an appointment with him with the NP at the neuro's office for 2 weeks from now and I am going to make them do an EEG this time. Ya know. When does it stop?

Renee,

(((((hugs)))))))

ITA with doing an EEG. I'm thinking if he was having some low-level ictal activity, and the Trileptal controlled it; it kind of makes sense that removing the Trileptal might have a kind of rebound effect, you know?

Doesn't make it any less worrying or frustratingly defeating.

Man, I wish you could catch a break with some of this stuff.

Renee,

Poor Mike!

It's interesting that the cognitive dulling is noticeable after you weaned him; it's possible his brain is literally having withdrawal symptoms.

I think Paula is right. Some kind of rebound effect or something. Please keep us posted. I'm curious in particular, my ped neuro says he's going to put my dd on trileptal in a year or two (she just turned 9 on Jan 6th). She's been on depakene since she was 18 months old, but the med tends to cause PCOS in girls if they take it during puberty he told me. Sorry he's going through this. I hope it's nothing serious.
