Hi! Sam is one of the Students of the Month for February in his class! He is so happy about it. He's been complaining the past few months that he never gets to be Student of the Month and, "even Janet(PDD) has gotten to be SOM." His behavior has been fine as far as I know so I mentioned him being upset about it (really upset sometimes) at the last Parent Teacher conference and low and behold - the next SOM is Sam....hmmmmm..... I'm not sure how I feel about that.
And this weekend he rode his two-wheeler with out the training wheels! We took them off last summer when he turned 7. He tried off and on over the summer to get it but he was just too anxious about falling and his feet would get mixed up when starting out. So he practiced just balancing in our little yard on and off Fall and Winter. The sidewalk is pretty tiny and he's just too big for his bike now that it was tough. We took him to a church parking lot close by this weekend (it was warm!) and he just took off...no problem! He's still having a hard time getting going, but a new bigger bike w/o foot breaks will help that. We are so happy for him; I wish we remembered the video camera! We're going to get him a new bike next weekend; I can't wait to see him on it.
I'm having a hard time lately. The 2 year old is sick and driving me insane. He's even more persistent and trying to be independent when he sick than when he's well. I feel like I'm constantly fighting with one of them. Either the two year old because he's trying to do something himself that he just can't or isn't allowed to do. And he hates if I pay any attention to Sam which is pretty much what happens at homework time! And that's difficult enough without the little one trying to sit on Sam or write on his sheet! Or Sam is wigging out because it's time to brush teeth (picture schedules and lists don't seem to help with this) or he just "can't" do something that needs to be done. I'm looking for a job during the day. I have no idea what I'd do with Sam after school or during vacations, but having to work at night and weekends really sucks! Sigh......I need a vacation or at least a night out alone with DH. Our 10 year anniversary is this summer. I'm really hoping the in laws will take the kids over night for a night or two.

Hi Crystee. Yay for Sam, WTG!! That's great he is student of the month and riding his bike without training wheels. I hope he really likes his new bike. That is exciting and ((((hugs)))) I'm sorry you are having a hard time. I hope you get a mini vacation without the kids. I am with you. DD slept over at her grandparents' house a few weeks ago. It wasn't much, but it was a nice break for us.

Hey Chrystee!
How old is Sam again? I am really trying to get Dave to ride a 2 wheeler and it has been such a struggle. I can't believe he is having more trouble than the rest of the kids doing this. He was the first to walk (just before 10 months) but he just cannot focus long enough to balance his bike and now he doesn't even want to try. I am thinking of taking it up on the school playgound grass over break and see if he can there.
WTG on the SOM. I know we have had the same problem here. Mike has been doing awesome I think and hasn't gotten a single one since 3rd grade though he has the same teacher. It isn't that she doesn't appreciate how well he is doing, we hear it all the time. Or that she doesn't want to, I just think that it gets overlooked for one reason or another. I wouldn't feel bad about mentioning it and then it happening. It is likely when you mentioned it she felt badly and realized that he really deserved it and she had overlooked him.

Sam will be 8 in June. I think the semi-break over the fall/winter really helped. We tried on the grass and he hated it. Our little sidewalk in our yard isn't very long (60 ft or so); the house is on one side and our driveway, usually w/car is on the other. When he practised there, he never really used the the pedals. He just coasted and balanced up and down the sidewalk all fall/winter. I think that he really got the balance part down that way. We're still working on getting the pedals figured out; the foot brakes get in the way though. He starts trying to pedal backwards and then hits the brakes and has to start all over again. Then when we went to the parking lot this weekend he just took off - once he got the pedals cooperating with his feet :)
It's nice that something came easy to him for once!
