Summer camp for asd kids in Atlanta

Anyone in the Atlanta area. Liam (7) has hiked with this guy's program on and off. Clay White has a day camp in the summer for kids with ASD's/esp. Aspies/adhd and hfa. Clay is a walking angel, and is phenomenal with our kids. Now that Liam is becoming more stable fingers crossed he'll be ready. We are also looking into it for Cian as he'll be 5 then. It's pricey but hopefully we'll have the natural supports waiver by then and they'll cover it. Just a heads up for GA people.

This sounds awesome! I've forwarded it to my sister in GA. Her kids tend to be a bit quieter, but it looks like it even has possibilities for them. I don't think my sister's kids have an official autism dx, but they at least have several of the components (esp sensory issues).

Dee,

The camp sounds amazing! Thanks for letting us all know. I will need to start saving my money! My only concern is that it is a long day, but I guess they will come home exhausted and go to bed early!

Hi Aimee,

Here in Ga you need to apply for the Katie Beckett waiver first. It's the medicaid waiver for disabled children when their parents are denied medicaid based on income. The KB waiver acts as if the child doesn't work, so why use the parents income against them, kwim? Now, you will need to go to Social Security to get a denial letter. Just tell them, you need a denial letter for Katie Beckett Then go to DFACS and ask for a Katie Beckett waiver package.

That will include forms for you to fill out as well as a physician form. We had the ped fill it out. You will also need to give them a copy of the SS denial letter, a copy of the psychological with the dx,(they like it to less than a year, but I was told a letter from the dx doctor as an update will work too) and a copy of his/her birth cert.

After all that the turnover is 30-60 days (depending on your region and county.) We are in the middle of the wait here in Cherokee co.

The plan is once we are approved for the Katie Beckett waiver we can then apply for the Natural Supports waiver. The NS waiver gives funds for respite, special needs camps, therapies that KB won't cover, eg: aqua or hippotherapy.

We have a case worker who is helping us through the process but even so it's A LOT of work and beurocracy. The case worker with the local region is going to do the legwork for us in terms of the NS waiver, but like I said it'll be a while before we can apply.

I'll let you know when we get the yea or nea from DFACS.

Be aware also that many health professionals still think you have to be severely physically disabled to get the KB or NS waiver. Rules have changed and yes those with Autism and Aspergers can apply now in GA.
