Curious.....what does everyone have planned for the summer? Do you load up on therapies or do you take a break?
I wish I could say that we have a vacation in our plans.......unfortunately not. We might take one or two very small, weekend trips....nothing exotic.
For Vaughn:
* Behavior Therapy - instead of twice a month.....he'll go once a week.....worked well last summer
* Music Therapy - going to an 8-week Music & Friends group (meets once a week) working on social skills and will start The Listening Program in July
* Social Skills - see above Music & Friends plus working with the local parents support group to have a weekly get together (pretty informal) to work on social skills
* Educational Activities - doing a summer bridge workbook (did one last year and it worked well) and 20 minutes of reading per day (Monday-Friday)
We also might have him do one-on-one swimming lessons.....still looking into that one.
We will also hit the pool and zoo and parks as often as possible.....both boys will enjoy that.

Malcolm did the Listening Program through his school for 2 years and it did help him. The headphones and CDs can run up, but it is nowhere near as expensive as Tomatis. We didn't pay for it because his school provided everything.
Busy Summer? Whew, let me commece ---
This summer, we are doing the Extended School Year that Malcolm always has on IEP, but hasn't always done. This year, we have decided the ESY is a good thing after we just moved him to new private spcial needs school where the kids are new to him and demands are much higher than they were at ASD school, so the summer 6 weeks will be a good time for him to solidify the gains in independence and self-soothing skills that he has been so hard at work at since the move in Feb. Also, ESY usually has half the kids, does swimming 2xs a week, field trips around the City 1 day a week, very little homework and lots of fun projects, like building an imaginary city on Mars where they would all like to live some day... Plus he continues full roster of therapies provided during school day, 2 OTs, 2 SLT, 2 behavioral sessions.
AND he will still have psychotherapy 2x a week after school, Tae Kwondo, Baseball and Basketball coaching, sports therapy, horseback riding and swim lessons plus we are going to take a few surfing lessons in July. This, minus surfing, is what our time is like right now, so summer is not too much different! Except in the summer, we will not ALSO have Little League or Chess Club...
And just when you thought we couldn't possibly fit in more, we are taking 2 weeks in August to participate in a theatre NT day camp In Cape Cod MA, where he'll be acting and I'll be teaching theatre movement and ass't directing a musical that he will be in, THAT should be lots and lots of fun!!! I think our performances will be around Aug 18....
Weekends we will be at little house in PA, with our tongues hanging out, doin' BBQs with friends. I am hoping some family comes to East Coast to visit. And we may go do some visiting late in Aug. after theatre camp, if we can still afford it by then!

Well, I have Tyler doing summer school this year. Only because the whole changing of schools and making new friends was sooo stressful for him.....his grades sorta took the "backseat" to his social life..lol!! He's not happy about it, but his grades were just a little lower than I would like them to be. And I know this little extra help will help him when entering 4th grade in the fall.
Nathan is doing the ESY program again this year. He just loves this sooo much. I will also continue his reading and working on math and money..the 2 areas he has difficulty with! His reading and spelling are going wonderfully, so I won't concentrate too much on that.
I don't really have anything else scheduled. I plan to fill up the rest of the time with swimming, going to the park. Work in some "spontaneous" outtings too!!! And, the boys are getting more attached to being with dad. Tyler is showing interest in learning golf too! So, I'd like to encourage more time with dad for both the boys. Nathan has always been closer to me, but now that dh is taking more time to learn about Nathan, they are getting closer. So, I think summer is a great chance for them to have more time together.

I'll let you know what we think of the Listening Program. The music therapy group near us will be running this for us. There is currently only one therapist who does this program and she is on maternity leave but will be back in July (the reason we are waiting to do it). As for costs: materials (CDs, player, and headsets) run about $600 and the therpist costs (for assessment and monitoring) is around $250-$350. It is a 16 week coarse where Vaughn will listen for two 15-minute sessions per day (Monday thru Friday only). I recently discovered that I have $750 of family resource money that I have to use before the end of June (the reason I am paying for this program now). The family resource money is from our county board of MRDD. Come July 1st, I will have $1500 for the next year to use on therapies, equipment, seminars.......anything that pertains to son's disability. I am sooooo glad I stubbled into this resource.

Well, both kids have been offered ESY again this year but I am not making them go this time. They both really hated it last year. Cait has a great one in middle school but it really wore her out. They had a social lesson then a field trip every day. Sounds like great fun but after a week she was begging to stay home. Too much input, lol.
I am working at a social skills/sensory integration camp for 2 weeks. Mike will come with me to that. The other 3 are going to "Camp Grandma" for those 2 weeks. My mom has a pool in her complex adn a movie theatre down the street so they will spend the week (1/2 days) with grandma.
Then we have a week of Vacation Bible School. I always volunteer as a crew leader and Mike is always in my crew. That is alot of fun too.
Then Cait and Mike are going to Camp I Can (Camp Including Chidren with Autism Now) that was started by the local ASA a few years ago.
Then for a few days we will take the kids too (sshhhhhhh don't tell) Disneyland!!!!!! We only live an hour away but haven't done it in 8 years because of autism issues. We think we may actually be able to try it this year. We are going to stay up there a few days and get a multiple day pass so we have the best chance at a successful visit (we usually have to keep visits to a few hours and you never know when someone might melt).
Trying to get Cait into a music therapy social skills group. She has her free screening next week. Still trying to get regional center to fund it.
Cait will be volunteering at her theraputic horsebackriding program.
Other than that lots of swimming and parks.

First thing I NEED to do is get his visual schedule started.
whoo, well I'm so tired from reading about what all of you have planned I think I'm going back to bed!
We don't have a single activity planned for Kyle, just the way he wants it. His summer plans include TV, game cube, computer, swimming in the backyard, and camping. My plans for him are to concentrate on biomedical. We are finishing up the virastop (an enzyme) protocol which I'm thrilled we did. When that's done we'll go back to chelation.
Dd is going to the library at her new school Tue. & Thur. for what they call AR reading. They read books and take comprehension tests on the computer. Wednesdays she has a nature explorers day camp. She's also going to a one day camp called fizz, bubble, & goo.
We'll all be camping most weekends. That's it for us.

Adam will do a 2 week summer enrichment camp 2 days each week
Gets wraparound 2 days per week
Early intervetion is still in progress so 3x per week
Preschool is off and on all summer so on week in July he'll go
August is just 2 weeks
We are considering hiring a private speech teacher since his evaluation stated he isn't Mature enough for outpatient help. What a crock!!!!!!!!!! I am still fighting that one.
But if the enrichment helps him, we'll do it again in August to keep it fresh for him
But in between we do Wildwood NJ for one whole week
Zoo, carnivals, day trips
I try not overload Adam with therapy. He'll be 3 in July
