SuperNu Thera????

I have just begun really researching trying supplements with Liam. We've already been using high EPA Omega 3's from Nordic Naturals and I know it has helped us so far. Wea re in the final stages of weaning Liam off risperdal, but will keep the focalin for now. I have been looking around and keep coming back to either SuperNu Thera or Dr. N's methyl B-12 shots (sp?)

I guess I am throwing out a general "whaddya know about this kind of thing?" I have tried organic direts, removing dyes and reducing sugar, some with better effects than others.

Lately We have noticed two things with LIam, (other than his awful teacher this year;). He seems more anxious, obsessive and is defintely ticcing again. He is also ASKING us about autism. Although we've never flaunted it, we've never hidden it from him either and figured we would answer the questions as they arose. Well today he asked at breakfast out of the blue "does Cian have autism?" I was floored. Then he asked about Roan. When out this afternoon he waved at a little girl right next to him; she recoiled in prissy horror and all the other adults laughed nervously. I quietly explained to Liam that this little girl wopuldn't be expecting his greeting and he hissed back to me, "don't you know anything about autism?!" It was funny and a little too close to home too, kwim?

Ayhoo, I digress; Liam has been on soooo many drugs, mood stabilizers, anti-psychotics, stimulants (8 in all) and the only thing we have remained consistant with is the Omega 3 supplements. So again, anyone have any knowledge about SuperNu Thera or any supplement with B-6, B-12 and/or magnesiun?

Dee,

We're seeing a nutritionist to help us tackle the supplements and she recommended the Nu Thera. I believe it is like Super Nu Thera but without the vitamins A and D, as we will supplement those separately.

The only thing thing to watch out for is that the high amount of b vits in Super nu Thera can be toxic so you want to watch for signs of toxicity. In addition, I am not sure what actual documentation or research they have behind it. I have not seen it really work for any kid honestly of those I have seen take it. I have not done it myself because some of the b levels make me nervous. Just as I wouldn't do the methyl b-12 shots until there is some valid scientific studies behind them.

First do no harm. I take this approach with medication and supplements. Unfortunately with supps there is no doctor over seeing them so as parents we have to be doubly vigilant.

LR is of a similar mind. She actually doesn't supplement at all and she has a good argument and I have definitely followed her lead on that one. We get our supplements through what we eat for the most part. There are a few things we take separately but we don't do mega doses of anything.

Honestly, next I would likely go for digestive enzymes and probiotics. Getting their system to actually process nutrients the way it should be can be a big help. Then the body and brain can use the nutrients that are provided efficiently.

I should clarify that I would not withhold supplements if a child was deficient, however, I wouldn't do mega supplements without being positive they were severely deficient for some reason.

I supplement through diet rather than mega vitamins. Increasing natural foods that naturally contain the supplements they need. But that is a personal choice.

I am just saying with all supplements you have to be wary. Even vitamins are not innocent and some do cause toxicity and can make a child quite sick if you are not cautious.

I know you have done your research but in general in the US there is a mindset that vitamins are just "good" and innocent, however, if a small child were to chew a whole bunch of chewable vits in one day with iron in it they could get very sick or it even be fatal.

If I were to do mega B vitamins I would likely not try the super nu thera route myself but would rather research which specific vits my kids were deficient in and supp with those specifically. I have done this in the past and it wasn't all that helpful for us so we don't anymore. The only things I have found helpful are the enzymes, etc.

In addition I think the enzymes are a good next step if you are doing omega's. Perhaps a child who has a mild deficiency would not be deficient if their body could properly utilize and process the vitamins in the foods they are eating.

Hmmm, I never thought of it like that. I certainly don't want to flood his system with things he doesn't need. How would I go about getting him tested for deficiencies? Family doctor, a nutricianist?

The issue we have with adding in vitamins through diet is Lliam eats about 4 things, and anything remotely healthy (ie: fruit and veggies )are evil in his eyes.

I also plan to add in omega 3's for Cian to see if that helps with his ADD tentancies. Gawd, this is a hard row to hoe, isn't it?

Hugs. I feel for you Dee, I have been in your shoes not too long ago (not that I am out of the woods yet). We have been doing the biomedical stuff since end of last school year. First, i would start off with B-6 (start low) like 5mg and increase it. Then add magnesium so b-6 is absorbed better. With these two I saw Sravan focussing better. Then I started him on B-vitamins from natural beginings (nbnus.com) and that worked well too. Then I added L-Theanine (but Sravan did not handle well). Since he was not a hyper kid, that made him sleepy. Pulled it out. Then I added DMG ( with folic acid) and that didn't work well, pulled out. Then I added TMG, he was way too hyper even with Folic acid and B-12, pulled that out. Now I have added the sublinguil B-12
