"Tea" at David's "full inclusion" class

A few days ago, I got a phone call from the woman who is running the new pilot "full inclusion" program at David's school. I don't know why they call it "full inclusion", because it's a small group for ASD kids, but that's neither here nor there. Anyway, she had already begun talking to my answer machine, but she repeated herself for me, and told me that she would like to get together with us in the classroom on the Friday before school starts, and would 2 o'clock be okay? So, I've been all excited that we're going to go find out what this thing will be like.

Well, this morning I FINALLY went and listened to/erased all the phone messages. I refuse to rush to the phone, since it's usually someone asking for donations, or a hangup, so if you call my house you'll probably have to talk to a machine for a few seconds before I pick up. I listened to what she had been saying before I picked up the phone, and she was inviting ALL of the parents to a "tea".

That's lovely, but now I'm kind of dreading it. I have to bring Nathan, too. He and David both DESPISE situations where there are groups of people eating cookies and all talking at once. Nathan especially. I even had Nathan evaluated last spring because of my concern. (Dev Ped said SID, school people said, "Bright Little Boy with No Problems at all except for being emotionally stunted because of the way his parents cater to his brother's Asperger's"...quotes mine ;))

So, what I thought was going to be a one-on-one situation is actually going to be a "tea." Gosh. She tells me there are only 4 kids in the program, but with parents, principal, 3rd grade gen ed teacher, and a few others, I just know that Nathan is going to be trying to drag me out the door the whole time.

Wish us luck. Oh, BTW, Friday is Nathan's 5th birthday, too.

Good luck. I hope it goes better than you expect. Since it is all for kids with ASD they will likely be more understanding there than in other situations. I bet even the teachers are more understanding of Nathan.

Cait is in a full inclusion class too. For her it means she is in a specialized program for autistic/asperger students but she is included for all academics in mainstream classes. We have a couple programs like that here. The day class (autism class) is like home base and that person is their case manager but they go to regular classes for academics but get as much support as they need from the inclusion teacher.

oh! I hope Friday goes well! I'm sure they'll be much more understanding than "regular" people. Nathan and Owen sound exactly alike. Owen is definitely SID and he hates going places where he's expected to sit or where there is not perfect order or good distraction (TV or other stimulation for him). He doesn't have any of the other AS or autie type characteristics, just SID. he tries to drag me out the door and will sit in my lap and whine and hide his face and head the entire time.
