teacher conference

First teacher conference was today. Teacher said son is doing well, no discipline problems. He's starting to converse with the other children. He still does not raise his hand, but she simply reminds him to do so. He needs to work more independantly as in when he finishes one subject move onto the next, not just sit there with his hands folded. He is still disorganized but now writes the homework down and does what he writes. For a while he was writing the assignment but doing something different. She does not see any major problems with son. I think she handles him well and that he responds well to her.Teacher is aware of difficulties with son's father and offered any support that I need.
Teacher is going on maternity leave after the holidays. Her replacement has not been decided.Considering the high quality of the rest of the teachers in the school I'm sure the replacement will be fine.
Son has to do three things to improve his grades:
1) Slow down - he races through the work
2) Show his work (or process) not just the answer
3) In his writing he has to analyze more and expand on his ideas. He can recite back stories but can not explain the story in his own words.
All in all, it was a good meeting.

Sounds like it was a good conference. We had ours right before Thanksgiving. Nathan is doing alright, but has a hard time keeping up. He's very slow...with everything. He's even the last one out when I pick him up after school. We're working on math and money...those seem to be his weak points. He also has problems with his expressive writing, but his speech is the same way! lol Still working on that!

YEAH! Sounds like a good conference and teacher. What grade is your son? Sounds upper elementary or middle school? Organization is such a bear when they get to that age. We are still trying to figure out how to manage that.

Advanced work class -4th grade. Son came from a small private school to large public school. I also reminded teacher that son skipped first grade. Organization, racing thru work and following directions seem to be a theme. But as he gets older showing the work seems to be more & more important. In math he gets partial credit for a problem if he shows the work but gets the answer wrong. We also have to remember that in additon to being socially immature/inexperienced due to asd, he is also a year younger than most of the kids in his class. The school seems to be a good match.
