test results back----so so

Liam's state test results came back and he only passed one out of the three subjects. Ironically he passed reading-his biggest challenge (neded over 800, got 803), and barely failed math and language arts (gt around 790's in both). His teacher even acknowledged a great deal of the math and LA was how the questions were wroded and even though it was an oral exam, she couldn't reword the questions to help him understand. That peeves me off big time, so much for accomodations!!!FUME!!!

Still we know he's bright and with it; just frustrating that the dumb standadized tests can't be adapted even moreso for out kids. Thankfully he has 3 more years until the next batch...phew!

I think it sounds like he did great on the tests. I've heard so many horror stories about standardized testing and this seems to prove it.

Still, disheartening to know he could have done much better if someone could have reworded the question so he got it.

This isn't meant to scare me, is it Dee? ;-)

No, in all seriousness, what's the point in setting a child up to fail? It really puts the teacher in a tough spot, because no doubt, she knows what Liam is capable of...but the stupid state Board of Education thinks they know better! UGH!

Dear Dee,

The tests are meant to access the school's success, not Liam's. The accomodations are what failed.

I think that he's still so young that he may start to "get" such verbal questions soon enough with his current educational plan, and basically start to get scores that fit with everyone's intuition about his grasping of the subjects. But if you don't think so, such as if you think he will need something visual that he is not getting with the accomadations, etc., now you have some data. I would think of this as a chance to see how Liam needs his tests administered, not an assessment of his skills.

Does he have to know his scores? I'd just tell him he did great on _____(fill in the blank with some recently aquired skill)___ and that you and the teachers are very proud of him.

h I fully beklieve it is hw the test that was administered that is what failed here. His IQ puts him as gifted in math but he fails the state test...yeah right!!!!

As for telling him; he's virtually unaware that he even took the test, so why tell him?
