Little advice from you all would be great!
Dave is having difficulties again. As those who have been around a while know, he cycles and it has been noticable since he was teeny. Quick history - he had his first big regressive episode we noticed when he was not yet 2. His behavior became impossible and he lost all langauge skills (from 5 word sentences to not even being able to answer yes/no). he was previously potty trained and lost all that too. This within a few days. We made appts. with docs but within 5 days most of his skills were back (except a few took much longer). This happened every few months or so up through preschool with the regressions less severe langauge wise each time (but still noticable) and the behaviors being really difficult and the main concern.
Behaviors - extremely hyper, uncontrollable to him or us. Dangerous behaviors with no fear (running infront of cars, climbing high and dangerous things). TONS of sensory seeking that was damaging (he would even hurt others). Hording and stealing food particularly sugary stuff. He would also line things but big things. He would dump all the boxes in the playroom and dump everything into big long pile lines. He would build these really wild intricate creations that had to be perfectly symtetrical, etc.
Oh he would have horrible rages lasting hours. He was tried on depakote and it didn't not agree with him. He has had EEG's for seizrue activity and has a REALLY odd eeg. In fact his EEG is typical of a person with severe developmental delays. He tried ritalin which worked wonders until it cause absence seizures.
Fast forward to now and here we are again. This is the time of year thatis the worst for him. As he gets older he is better able to control so I haven't done anything drastic.
This time he is manic hyper again. His teacher is noticing a difference. He rushes through his work and is very squirmy but she is patient and he holds it together. At home he is stealing and hording sugar again. He gets angry for over an hour at a time and will now hide in his room (big improvment over previous rages). He is doing dangerous things again and has no impulse control. He is so hyper CONSTANTLY that he has us all on edge but I can't try ritalin because of the seizures.
I don't trust our docs and haven't had good help from them. The teacher is open to sensory stuff in class.
The therapist today again suggested possible BP for him but he goes from being great/wonderful kid to this manic cycling thing back to great wonderful kid.
WWYD?

i know you've had dificulty with meds but seroquel was a huge help for us. risperdal added much weight to son. son has a new school where his behaviors are just accepted. well not really accepted just dealt with and are not a big issue. therapy and a psychatrist have helped him & i to talk out problems. when he was manic hyper, i would give him melatonin to sleep. this seemed to help him to hold it together during school.
i wish i had more suggestions for you. hope you find something that works.
Well
