Thought I'd finally introduce myself...

I've been lurking for months, but have never had the chance to actually post. I've really been able to use a lot of the information (and to laugh, too!) that everyone has posted lately!

My name is Connie & I have 2 great kids with ASD (and a DH who has Aspie traits). Logan is 4 now & was diagnosed with PDD (but the doctor thinks he'll eventually swing more towards Asperger's). Duncan is 2.5 and more along the straight autism diagnosis but since he talks (repeats everything, but does it clearly!) the doctors are reluctant to give him the full diagnosis. It doesn't really matter to me one way or the other.

We've been having a LOT of trouble with the school system here and they refuse to admit (despite 3 different doctors diagnosing Logan and the school's autism specialist also verifying the diagnosis) that Logan has autism...he's "just a loner" or has other developmental delays. We've been fighting the battle for 1.5 years now...I'm hoping a change in schools (if we can manage it!) will make a difference.

My guys have a lot of highs & lows...we're doing some of the biological treatments (without telling anyone what we're doing) and laugh when the school personnel tell us that Logan's been making such HUGE progress after we start a new one. Of course, when there is a problem I'm always told I'm a bad parent (no discipline or structure in the home, they say...yet none has ever come to visit or to ask what we do in certain situations!)& that I'm pathologizing my child (the OT who told me that was instantly fired, by the way!) Both of my boys throw some humdinger tantrums, but overall, it's fun to be with them and to watch their perception of the world.

I'll be posting in the next few days to see if you have any ideas on how to get the school to deal with Logan's social skills as well as how to work with a child with ASD who is being bullied & is upset about it (but can't generalize social stories & the school won't help out with it anyway).

I'm looking forward to getting to know everyone better! I'm SO glad this Board is here!

Hi Connie, nice to "meet" you. I've got an almost six year old with aspergers. He also knows how to throw some humdingers of fits too. I always enjoy hearing from others who are in the same boat.

welcome

Hi Connie,

Nice to meet you at our board. Going through some of the same frustrations with our school as well with my dd in 3rd grade. Actually she really had understanding teachers was in preK adn in 2nd grade. It can be hard to find them, but they are worth thier weight in gold. I am sorry you are dealing with this so early.

Unfortunately it seems some just get it and some don't. I hope you are able to help them understand soon or find some one who does.

Good luck to you and look forward to seeing you around here more often.

Renee
