Hi Tina,
I hope all is well with you. Thanks for your kind words!
I was just wondering if you had ever noticed Elizabeth using echolalia? I know she's a couple of months older than Ella but they still are kind of at the same level with how much speech they should have. Ella is using echolalia a lot and it's really worrying me because now when she hears something on the T.V she says it immediately after she hears it. I talked to Jakes ST and she says that NT kids do this too. All of Jakes therapists think Ella is not on the spectrum and that all her issues are just sensory. She does have great eye contact and great gestures and I don't see any repetitive play but I just don't think her echoing is normal. Any advice?
Teresa
P.S
We are putting our house for sale in April and are planning to buy in Havertown because Haverford school district is pretty good for kids with special needs. Have you heard of any other good school districts in Delaware County?

Hi! I'm not Tina, but just wanted to tell you that my DS sounds a LOT like your DD. DS is 28 months, and were were just approved for 2x60 ST because, while he's great at repeating what he hears, he's not good at putting words together into sentences. He can repeat sentences we've taught him but he isn't creating his own sentences. Plus he tends to walk around reciting Blues Clues episodes, word for word. And when I'm trying to have a conversation with him, he'll just repeat what I say rather than responding to it. In ST terms, he has no "functional" language.

DD (4 y.o. PDD-NOS) used exactly the same kind of echolalic speech when she was DS's age -- however she also had a host of other issues (aggression, complete inability to play with her peers, anxiety, etc.) and DS doesn't have those behavioral or social issues. The speech pathologist who evaluated DS said that in families with a history of ASD, it's not uncommon for a child to exhibit a "PDD-like speech delay," in her words, but none of the other symptoms associated with PDD. This seems to fit DS. We're hoping that, because we caught him so early, ST will really be able to help him get back on track.

If you're concerned about Ella, I'd call E.I. and ask for an evaluation -- it certainly couldn't hurt. Even if she's not technically on the spectrum, she might need a bit of a push with her language.

HTH!

I noticed that you are in SE PA and considering moving to Delaware Co. One of our therapists lives in DE Co and was a special ed teacher in the school district for a long time, before she moved into EI for better hours. Perhaps she can give you an insiders view of the district. If you are interested, email me and I can give you her phone number. She is very personable and obviously very knowledgeable about the system from the teacher perspective and from a parent perspective...her son is in special ed, too...for sensory issues.

Good Luck,
Gemma

Tina,
Thanks so much for asking around for me. I know you understand what it's like to be moving and trying to set all this up when you are an hour away and most of the agencies don't want to know unless you are living in the area already. Any information you could get for me would help me out a lot.

Jennifer,
It's so funny but you've put my mind at ease a bit. Jake and Ella have very similar speech patterns and I think that's whats freaking me out about her. In every other way she seems NT except for the sensory stuff which has improved so much I think we will lose services for her. She has a lot of speech that's not echoing but she seems to have a tougher time than Jake did putting it all together.I have asked about getting speech therapy for her put Jakes ST thinks she won't qualify. Thanks!

Gemma,
Thanks that would be great to have someone who knows what schools have the most services.
