Total Lego insanity

Hi everyone.

I've mentioned a number of times that David (8, AS) is totally obsessed with Legos. In fact, we all love Legos, but David is the one who *constantly* building or playing with what he built. And he's the one who will probably miss his own wedding because he's busy building. Since he was five we have acquired a LOT of Legos. Some of them are sets DH owned before, some are sets that David got for presents for other family members, and lately, Nathan (4) has been getting some of his own.

Anyway, for quite a while now, I have been recognizing that the Lego situation is rapidly getting out of control. Just out of curiousity, I decided to estimate the number of Lego pieces we have by looking in the catalog and seeing how many pieces are in sets like those we have...and with a little math, I figured out that we have about nine Legos per square foot of our house (including kitchen, bathroom, under beds, etc.) No wonder the house is blanketed in Legos all the time! LOL! (Okay, our house is pretty small.)

And...to top it off, I don't think I even counted Bionicles, although maybe I did. We've got a zillion of those, too.

Well, at least with so many Legos, the two boys never have to fight over pieces. WRONG! It's amazing how at the same exact moment in time they both suddenly NEED the glow-in-the-dark Professor Snape head.

Is this insane or what? ;)

Evelyn, who, at the age of nine, wished she could live in a house of Lego. Be careful what you wish for!

Eveyln,

WOW!!!! That's alot of Legos! My boys like Legos too...and the bionicles. But right now my boys are into Star Wars. Nathan doesn't seem to obsess just on one thing though. He obsesses on a "variety" of things. So one has to stay up to date.....or you're in big trouble!!!

My brother, who is now an adult waiting for his son to get into Legos, used to spend hours building things with his Legos. He used to get sooo mad if my sister and I even touched any of them!! LOL He would literally stay in the same exact position FOREVER....just building. But he's nowhere on the spectrum though!

I like having the bigger house now. No more clutter downstairs...well, my clutter, but NO toys!!! All the toys are upstairs. If it comes down...it has to go back up!!!! YEAH!!

I haven't posted in a while.. but this is definitely a topic I can relate to, lol! Ryan is 6.5, and our house has been overrun with legos for quite some time! I don't even want to think about how many we have.

We originally got into Bionicles about 2-3 years ago. I remember buying them because they were toys that Ryan actually played with appropriately, as far as I could tell. He built them, and pretended with them, making them fly around and stuff. Now he puts the bionicles or star wars sets together, plays with them that way for awhile, then takes them apart and redesigns them into new ones. I hate that, the leftover parts are all over his room, my room, EVERYWHERE.

I wish I could have been the one to think up the whole legend of Metra Nui thing with the Toa.. what a marketing gimic.. I could be a millionaire now.

Did you know lego means "play well" in Danish? Ryan told me this the other day..(I think he got it from the web site)

Mike once told me it meant "play well".

Nice thing about Lego is everyone has ALWAYS known what toy Mike will appreciate and there are always more to get.

He even has a huge box of lego's that where his dad's when he was a kid 30 years ago. (Ok, so apples don't fall far from trees) Dave is getting into them too.

This year I went and did it. I got him a big lego set he had been asking for. He never kept his sets together before so I never saw a reason to get him a big one but now he does. He has little containers for each one. Between me, my mom and one aunt he will have almost the whole collection of Dino Attack legos (and a big container just for those). He is going to be ONE happy MAN!

yes, it's insane, but I live in the same world! Our boys have tons of legos as well. Warren is 14 and has been obsessed w/ legos since he was 2-- he started w/ duplos and quickly progressed to legos when he was 4. We have enough legos to fill 4 of the large rubbermaid containers (and this doesn't include the ones that are built and noone can touch on the shelf in the boys' room). We don't have a large collection of Bionicles yet-- Weston has discovered the Binonicles books and movies, so this could be his new obsession (though he's currently obsessed w/ time/watches/clocks so we'll see). When Warren or Weston has another boy over their eyes just about bug-out at the sight of our legos.

And what is Weston getting for Christmas? Mega Blocks Pyrates ships!

the pirate ships are cool!

DS's obsessive interest is trains so the only lego sets we have are the Harry Potter's Hogwarts Express and we also found a steam loco engine (over 2500 pieces) - both are completed and NO ONE is permitted to touch them....especially his little brother. He did sit for several hours straight to put them together (with help from his stepdad) but he is only interested in the trains....we tried to get him another set (a battleship from Star Wars) but he has no interest in it.

Maybe his little bro will like Legos....we'll see.

Wow, what a relief! I started this thread a few days ago and haven't had a chance to get on the computer since then. I was kind of afraid I'd check back and find that people had responded with stuff about how I need to take some control and not allow my child's obsession to overrun our entire house. (That would be true, of course...but I don't actually want you guys to say it! LOL!) I'm so glad that so many of you understand!
