Time for me to vent...I bought my ds a V smile for christmas. For a long time he wasn't interested in it but in the last 2 weeks he has learned how to play with it. He came crying to me last night saying that it was broke. When I looked at it he had chewed through the hand control cord. First, I thought he was long past the oral stage and I was concerned that he could have gotten hurt. Now I can go buy a new hand control set but I can't leave him a lone with it anymore. It might seem petty but that was my down time and now it's gone.

Stephanie! I know the feeling of not being able to leave him alone. My ds gets into EVERYTHING!!! One idea i have for your is to wrap the cord with strapping tape. The kind that you cannot tear by hand. It is REALLY heavy duty and I imagine it would take him a while to chew through that. That way you can check it after each time he uses it and re-wrap if necessary. But I seriously doubt he can chew through this stuff...it's some tough stuff! I bought my son a V-smile for christmas too...he still doesnt play with it , but we are working on it! Hugs and love to ya!

You can also spray something really nasty tasting on it. I know they have those sprays for dogs so they don't chew (got a chewing dog). I have a feeling rubbing it down with tabasco or vinegar may disuade him. You may have to reapply for a while but it would likely change that behavior.

I feel your pain. I thought Mike was over the oral stuff FINALLY to and today I caught him rolling and chewing the entire tube for a gogurt type yogurt. Mike hasn't broken anything but he has gagged and nearly choked on his fair share of inedibles.

Hi Stephanie,
You got some great advice already. My lil guy is 5. I give him choices if he starts to bite us or chew on his shirt. He can have bubble gum, fruit leather, or his chewys that we got him at OT. One is shaped like a P. They have these in the abilitations.com catalog. At least it gives him a choice and something appropriate to chew on.
