The trouble with maps . . .

So far, the one area (academically) with which Henry struggles is maps. He's almost 7 and in the 1st grade. Of course, the "maps" they have been using so far are thing like--a map of an apartment building with 4 squares and a name in each square like "The Smiths", then the questions are "Who lives in the top left apartment?"

I've decided to attempt to make the map concept more concrete, and here are my ideas so far--

1. Make a map of our house (maybe with Henry's input or even letting him draw the map), then hiding stuff and using the map to find it.

2. Make a map of our neighborhood or a park, and playing some sort of scavenger hunt or finding game using it.

Any other ideas?

Thanks.

Robin,

Try 3-D first, then go to 2-D.

You can use manipulatives: blocks or legos
