I wish I had helpful suggestions, but just wanted to let you know we are in the exact same boat here. Aaron will not entertain himself in any way unless it is TV, or hiding out in his ball pit. His current obsession is the 101 Dalmations. My husband works long, bizarre hours. Last summer put me in such a state that I am now on antidepressants. Aaron is currently in morning preschool every day, but that will end for summer next week.
I have tried to go into this summer with more of a plan, but still don't have much of one. Out of desperation we hope to buy a small 36-inch deep above ground pool. Otherwise he is not interested in playing outside at all , especially after the heat and mosquitoes start up.
I will probably be the only mother not crying when I send him off to all-day Kindie next year, LOL.
It sounds to me like he may be needing some sensory input (I'm thinking heavy work) and I am wondering if you can put any of that energy to work for you?
Can you have him carry stuff? Maybe move books from one bookshelf to another, organize the cans in the pantry or even push the vaccum cleaner around for a bit of you have an upright?
I'm thinking any carrying/lifting, pushing/pulling or even jumping on the spot might help him.
I often have Peter help me to crush cardboard boxes: stomp on them to flatten them, then fold them and get them ready for recycle. It seems to really help to calm him down, and he is actually becoming a pretty useful helper.
I'm also thinking on the sleep thing, if blackout blinds or even a heavy blanket thrown over the curtains might help him to sleep a bit longer? Siobhan can't sleep if there is any light in the room (neither can I), and used to be a bear in summertime until I discovered.
a: brushing and b: blackout curtains.
She ued to get more hyper and more volatile when she was low on sleep, which is why I think it might all be connected.

Dee, Paula gave some good suggestions. Jake is the exact same way with me and I always feel like I have to entertain him otherwise he just starts some other kind of repetitive play instead.Heavy works does wonders for him! It has to be so much harder for you because of the pregnancy because I know on both pregnancies I was a complete lunatic because of the hormone swings and I was tired all the time. ((HUGS)) It'll get easier!!! Teresa
Often we are too close to see the woods for the trees and we need someone a few feet back to say "LEFT! go left. There's a path, ya lunatic. Stop walking into that tree"
I's been done for me often enough.
I'm glad the book is helping. Sure, if four hours on the swing doesn't help; you can always knock him out with it.
Och, y'Irish gals are a hoooot!! I'm chucklin' violently over here with the "LEFT! go left. There's a path, ya lunatic. Stop walking into that tree" and I'm stealin' that directly.
