Good for Isaac! He handled this whole silly no RH thing very very well.

Don't feel bad about rewarding his doing something bad with a preferred toy. Here we call that a "contract", lol. My kids LOVE contracts and we used them often! It is usually something they want anyway so often I use it to my advantage for something they have to do that is particularly hard for them.

We are working more on "intrinsic motivation" but that is a tough thing for ASD kids. Cait is starting to get it but Mike isn't there yet.

As for the RH problem.....online ordering baby. Order a bunch and squirrel them away for when you need them.

Hi Debbie,

We do the online ordering and Malcolm helps do the ordering on the computer, which he loves to do. Then he gets to get all excited when the UPS guy comes as well.

HOW GREAT THAT ISAAC DID SO WELL!!! That could be a hard one for Malcolm even now, although currently unpredictable, he might be able to handle it. But I certainly don't think he could have done so when he was only 5 years old. CONGRATS!!!

TRU is offering free shipping on some of their items now, so you might want to give the online ordering a closer look. But I certainly understand...my DS, now 9, was obsessed with RH's for a while...back when he was 4. This was when they first started making them, and they were really hard to find.

As for rewarding behavior...had to do it just yesterday. Our youngest (6 y/o autie) is absolutely terrified of public toilets, particuarly the automatic flushing ones- and she won't tell us when she needs to go, so when we're not at home, we have to force her to go to avoid accidents. Yesterday we were in a big mall (out of town) and of course, all the toilets are auto-flush. Hysterical screaming, terrified, meltdown-and she didn't go. So I tried taking her into an older "anchor store"- and although those toilets were not auto-flush, she was still traumatized from the first experience. When she started to meltdown again, some a**hole women in the bathroom started laughing at her. Needless to say, THAT didn't help the situation. Finally we left the mall and DH promised her a new book if she'd go potty at Borders. She agreed, but I had to ensure that they weren't self-flushing toilets before she'd even walk into the bathroom! Luckily all the stalls were empty, she was able to go...and now I'm stuck listening to her read Angelina Ballerina over and over again.

We're spectrum parents...we do what we gotta do, right???

Debbie......good for Isaac.....he handled the no RH situation beautifully. I agree.....order online and stock up.

Amy.....Vaughn was terrified of auto flush toilets as well.....they were at his preschool....luckily there was a bathroom on the first floor that did not have auto flush toilets....they let him use those....I've been there.....
