I am new here and hope someone can help me out or offer some story(ies) about something similar with their child.

I have heard some people say stuff on here about vocal stims or vocal tics.

My non ASD child, started eye blinking after a week on the Daytrana patch and we pulled him off immediately - for ADHD. The neurologist and ped said he should NEVER have any stimulant again (not even caffeine). So he is currently on Stratera. It has helped the blinking too, but they haven't gone away.

We went with Stratera because it may also help the RAN (rapid automized naming) aspect of his dyslexia. Anecdotally, it seems to have helped.

My son has very high anxiety (with a dx of pdd-nos, adhd, mood disorder nos) and is taking BuSpar for mood regulation, it also helps a bit with anxiety.

When he is really stressed we see stims.

Thank you very much that makes me feel better to know that it is common for ASD kiddos to do this!

I was wondering if we were looking at an additional diagnosis because of them, and seriously hoping not.

THank you I am so glad I found this board!

Yep.

Graham does certain things when he is anxious too. Right now, it's this gutteral, back of the throat, cough-like thing. But he paces too and holds onto his penis .

ADHD meds can definitely increase anxiety, but anxiety comes with the AS dx too. Imagine not understanding all the subtle social cues and quirks around you. It would make me nervous too! It's tough to be on the spectrum.

School is definitely more stressful than home, so I'm not surprised that when school started up again, the vocal tic/stim did too.

So Welcome to the board!

It's a place where you can come and be understood. Ask any question, vent, share, and just generally be yourself. We're all just BTDT moms, but our ears are good and our hearts in the right place.

See you around!
