Hi all,
I should have posted this earlier because they might not have it up much longer. A friend of mine (we live in the same subdivision and our 13 yr olds are good friends) is a kindergarten teacher in the elementary school in our district that houses the autism program. She had several inclusion students w/ autism this year. She was the 'teacher of the week' at one of the tv stations this week. Also the State Department of Education came and shot video of her and her classroom and teaching techniques this week for a training video on inclusion this week (SC is really behind when it comes to inclusion and mainstreaming). Several times this year she would call me and ask about different problems she was having w/ her little students. She would also call when she had break throughs and little victories. She's been nominated for teacher of the year for the SC autism society by one of her parents AND several families are moving to our district for the autism program and are requesting her for their teacher--- she's humble and a little freaked out by this because she really feels like she's flying by the seat of her pants (tho I think it's the personality and willingness to try whatever it takes to keep that student able to be in the regular classroom). This was her first year teaching in the autism program, she had 4 students w/ autism out of her 19.

Betsy,
Fantastic! I love hearing good stories like that. It really is good to hear about the good stuff. and personally I really like hearing about good teachers. There are many but unfortunately the bad can sometimes overshadow the good. Good for her for helping those kindergarteners.
