Hi,
We had Sravan's IEP today and the school is trying to push us for a different placement at another school. Sravan has made huge progress this year. I do not want any changes since he will be in 5th grade and a change is inevitable next year. We have given consent for the school to look around for another program, but we strongly feel he should be here.
Currently we have the following supports:
1) Pull out for speech - 45 min/week
2) Pull out for written assignment (45 min / 3 times and as and when a new written assignment comes up)
3) All notes be given it to him
4) Extra copies of worksheets (so he doesn't have to copy the problems)
5) He can use AlphaSmart at school and testing times
6) During STAR testing another person will bubble his answers for him.
7) Some of his buddies will go to his class next year.
8) Continue to eat lunch in the office
But the principal feels that the workload for next year will be enormous and the teacher will not have time for Sravan as the current teacher has.
We are very confused. I forgot to ask for homework organizatoin part, can this be added?
thank you,
Anandhi

it can always be added! an IEP meeting can be called whenever you feel it necessary.
I'm confused by the change in placement if he's doing better and making progress. It's an Individual Education Plan because it's individual for your child, not what the teacher has time for. If he's currently in least restrictive environment (LRE) and in a free and APPROPRIATe public education (FAPE) and making progress, meeting his IEP goals then it really doesn't matter if the teacher has time.
The workload can always be adjusted for him as well. for example, If he 'gets' the math after 2 problems why make the kid do 15?? it's just a waste of his time and frustrating besides. They can make accomidations for that. If there are 25 spelling words for the class, give him 15 that are representative of the lesson they're learning.
We have Weston's transition IEP for going to middle school tomorrow morning. This is going to be a huge change for him. I can't imagine his having changed between 4th and 5th grades and then again for next fall-- it would be very very difficult. This year has been ok only because he was in a familiar environment and we knew all the people he'd be in contact with. Next year w/ a whole new staff and all new teachers is going to be difficult!
hope he gets the best placement for him!
