We have an advocate now!

Hi all. We have an advocate working with us now to get Sam (nearly 7, 1st grade, AS, ADHD and reading diabled) an appropriate placement for next year and in a summer program for reading and social skills (extended school year stuff.)

She thinks we have a case for the extended school year based on the Neuro-psych eval and his lack of progress in academics. I already mailed my request for an IEE for a private FBA so we can get a good Behavior Intervention Plan in his IEP. We'll also be fighting for social skill goals in the IEP and some help at recess. I cannot afford to pay for the reading program ($120 per week) and I'm worried that they will want him to go to the social skill classes at the Child and Family Center at the local hospital. I decided not to send Sam to these because the woman who runs them has a *really* thick accent that I don't think Sam can understand - so what's the point?!?! It's too much during the week for us to travel very far afterschool so I didn't find an alternative. There is a half day summer camp not too far that I'm hoping I can get him into though.

His current teacher is driving me crazy. Sam wore shorts under his pants yesterday (thought it would be funny, I don't care as long as he's not hot.) So he pulled his pants down in class at some point to show everyone. She sent him to the office with a note. He says noone talked to him there, but I'm not entirely sure about that; he's taken to lying alot to get out of the many times he gets into trouble (often in situations like this, not obvious rule breaking or aggression.) I get a lovely laundry list at the end of the day when I see her. I'm pretty sick of this school. Even if he stays there for 1st grade again in the Sped inclusion class (fewer kids and a full time aide) I know he won't be there for 2nd because the 2nd grade teachers just won't be good matches for Sam (according to his current teacher.)

He's so stressed out and worried about getting into trouble at school. I'm not sure what to do about it so close to the end of the year. He's only been bringing home spelling practise for homework; and I've been allowing him to write his words only once instead of three times, as long as it's super neat printing. I've never seen him concentrate and write so legibly! And we're trying to put less pressure on him overall at home; he's still doing well getting what he needs to get done finished without too much trouble.

I'll fill you in next week after our Team meeting
