Isn't it silly, but I'm thrilled to finally announce Liam has been dx with very high functioning asperger's, at least by his therapist and mild

Isn't it a great feeling to finally know. Not that you want a diagnosis but at least now your son will get all the help he's entitled to and the school district can't brush you off anymore.I have a sister who wasn't diagnosed with schizophrenia until she was 30 years old. From about 3 years old my mother knew something was wrong and she brought her from one doc to the next. My mother was told it was just a behavior problem and that it was a personality clash between the two of them. One psychiatrist hypnotized my mother because he believed my sisters behavior was a result of my mother not loving her(LOL).I know my sister's teachers also believed she could control her behavior and she had a really hard time in school because of that. Mind you this was an Irish Catholic School 25 years ago and there really wasn't very much known about mental illness and how to treat it back then.I'm happy to say she has done really well considering all she went through before she was given a diagnosis. My mother felt a great sense of relief to finally know for sure what she had always believed in her heart that my sister was schizophrenic. My sister has been married almost 8 years and has 4 wee ones, and as long as she's taking her meds she's happy and content. I'm really proud of her!
I got a bit side tracked there but basically I guess my point is a mothers instinct is usually right and you obviously were spot on!Liam is lucky to have a mom who never gave up looking for answers.

>>It's so odd, but I feel great today, is the crash about to come?<<
I don't know! mot people have the "I was expecting this, but it still feels like a kick in the teeth" reaction. You're the first person I met who was really pleased!!!
Seriously, I am glad you finally got the DX. Regardless of the kicks int he teeth, it does feel good to finally be proven right, and to have a big outstanding question answered. Now you can fully move on to the next step, which is beating this new information into the school district. Oh the fun days ahead...!

Dee,
Congratulations on the dx!!! You've obviously waited a long time for this! LOL And I agree with you....I think sometimes God thinks our shoulders are made of iron! We can sure take a beating though, can't we!?

Hmmm,
I wouldn't say I am pleased with having special needs kids; it wasn't exactly on my to-do list.
That's great, Dee.
Yeah, that makes sense Dee.
I think you are coming from a slightly different place in the diagnostic process than most of us. For many of us, if there was a diagnosis before it was ADHD or developmental delay, or really a bunch of searching and no answers, so when we hear autism it is our kick in the teeth. Yours came with the BP dx and then when Aspegers came it made more sense, kwim? At that point you have already gone through processing that your son has a life long difference, now it is a matter of finding the right one.
Not that ADHD wasn't a life long disorder when my ds was dx'ed with it. But in the grand scheme of things, ADHD just seemed like a bit of a glitch and with medication and some modifications we would be able to fix things. But with autism it was more dramatic, life long, etc.
I have known a few people with BP kids and if the child recieves a comorbid AS dx they are happy too. Often not only becuase it explains more but there is such a stigma with kids with mental health issues that it was a relief for them to say "but he is autistic too". Does that make sense? Many have said that with autism there is more acceptance and more supports. They would rather get a AS dx than a BP one.
