My DD just turned 4 and I decided that we are going to make the switch to underwear over Feb. break. I am really, REALLY hoping that it works... after 4 years of diapers, I am soooo sick of it!!!
Just as an FYI, when DD was 3.5 we were planning on getting rid of the diapers. As luck would have it, we had her evaluated through the school district the week before we were planning on switching to underwear. The team who assessed DD said, "Don't switch to underwear yet; she's honestly not ready." I was bummed to hear it -- and I'm still not entirely convinced that they were right -- but we did decide to wait a little longer. At this point, even though DD does still go in her pullups, I really think she's ready to make the swtich, and just needs a little push. At least, that's what I'm desperately hoping!!!
Let me know if you come up with any great potty training techniques/tips -- I'm all ears!

Not that this will happen, but we were in potty training for over a year and a half. My biggest challenge was to not PRESSURE him, but keep it fun and light, watch the many videos, read the books, practise practise practise. His school also helped, but as it was an ASD school many of the kids were in same boat. Almost all his small class trained before him, though.
I've told this story here before, but when I asked him when he thought he might start using the potty, he said "Don't worry, Mom. I'll use it when I'm 6!" (At the time, he was 4 and change, I was getting nervous because of kindegarten at a new school...) Then he pulled it back to 5, then "soon".
Actually, he was probably 4 months short of 5 years old when he got it, all at once, both ends, dry through the night and never another diaper. We were so excited, he was pretty nonplussed about the whole thing...
Boy, when they are not ready, they are REALLY not ready.

We started Cait at 2.5 because we didn't know she was delayed. In fact my pediatrician said I was crazy and she was fine. So I figured if she was fine she should be potty training. WHat a huge mistake. She didn't get it at all and continued to have problems for a long time. We potty trained on and off for the next 2 years and she finally got it at 4.5 too.
Mike learned somewhere around 3 to 3.5 I think, but again I was trained more than him. In other words he didn't initiate I would take him regularly. He has a bit of issues around germs and sensory so actually training him for poop was easier once we got him to do it in the toilet a couple times. He continued to wet himself small amounts (didn't feel the urge)and wet the bed until he was about 8.5. He had the concept of going potty and would go but often would wait too long or not feel it when he started to go.
We tried Mike around 2 as well figuring then that he was typical and typical kids learn at 2. It Freaked HIM OUT in a big way to see pee come out of his privates. That was the end of potty training for a while.
Dave trained himself at 18 months initially, then 4 months later had a huge regression in language, behavior and potty skills. It took a long time for him to relearn and then even when he did he would sneak around the house and go potty on the floor until he was over 4. He would literally walk by the bathroom (not angry or anything) into the playroom. Pull down his pants and poo on the floor. Pull up his pants and walk out. I never did figure out what the heck that was about but for years I would find poop and pee in various lovely places. We had to get really inventive to curb that one and keep an eye on him.
THANK GOD all my kids are trained now.

Nathan was trained at age 3. Since we didn't know he was autistic, I just took the same approach that I took with his brother. I kept taking him to the bathroom and I was very consistant. It took a bit for him to catch on. At first, he didn't have a CLUE!! I knew he was delayed in his speech so I figured that's why. So I just kept at it. Once he went, he got it....just like that. I thought it was odd that he got it so quickly. But he's the same way now about things. Once he "gets" it, he's fine.

Ooohhhh....potty training.....I always hated this topic. Both my sis-in-laws perfect children were all trained at 2.5 if not before....mine was almost 4. I hated family gatherings...."is he STILL in diapers/pull-ups?" I truly believed my sis-in-laws were more trained then their children.....every hour on the hour putting the child on the potty. I worked fulltime and my daycare provider had 3 others to worry about....she did her best. I decided when he was about 3 that I was not going to force him....he'd go when he was ready. I did try all the books, tapes, sticker charts....you name it. Finally, both Sheila (his daycare provider) and I tried to put him on the potty at least once an hour and asked him to make potty - if he did - big praise - if not - told him good try and we'll try again later. We really started trying this when I noticed that he was waking up dry most mornings. My son has always learned new skills in a step progress.....like a light switch....one day not potty trained....light switch goes on....he's potty trained. That is how he learns....he struggles with something for a while and then BAM! (light switch on) he can do it and he has learned it.
I know it's frustrating but hang in there....our kids can be like little cars that have slipped out of gear.....sitting there grinding their wheels and then all of a sudden they slip into gear and are off and running. It will happen.
My babe is 18 months and I am not even going to worry about potty training for quite some time - I do hope he trains faster than his brother....

Books, Tapes, ROFL. This reminds me.
We FINALLY Got the idea through to Cait with this potty video we rented from the library. I don't remember the name but I sure remember the song cause she made us sing it to her forever "S/He's a super-dooper-pooper! S/He can Potty With the best! No more diapers to get in her way, we are very impressed!"
You should be impressed. I haven't had to sing that song in about 7 years. See what an impact it made on me!
Renee
We have that video. We're still singing the song. All. Day. Long.
At least it's catchy...
