Euan (9, Asperger's) has been nominated by his school to attend a creative writing workshop for 'young, gifted writers' - a national scheme usually aimed at secondary-school aged (11+) kids, and rumour has it the session will be led by none other than JK Rowling (she of Harry Potter fame and probably Scotland's most famous children's writer), but I don't believe that for a minute! We don't know if he'll win the place - the school submitted some of his work, but they are already promising him an aide if he gets it because they are so impressed with his work and want him to go. He's already had his work taken to several international conferences by his teachers as an example of what inclusive education (ie mainstreaming AS kids in normal classrooms rather than sending them to special schools) can achieve.

Euan, of course, is supremely unimpressed and has pointed out that he already *knows* how to write stories, and I can well imagine we are going to have to do some serious anxiety-quelling if he does go (he's already flapping about missing school). But it so makes a change from the number of times we were hauled in to his previous school for 'behavioural problems', it's so exciting to be asked to come in to discuss something so positive! I'm so SO glad we moved here!!

Kirsty,

That is BRILLIANT!!! I am very chuffed for you that Euan has been nominated. I hope he is picked and that he can handle all the input when it happens. I know he probably doesn't appreciate it now, but when he is older, it will be something to look back upon and be very proud of.
