I know there has already been some discussion in the past about weighted blankets and vests, etc.

I made a blanket for my daughter. I made a bunch of vertical columns in the blanket and filled them up with pvc beads...like what's in Beanie Babies. Turned out pretty well. She doesn't use it though. She had developed her own system over the years. She stuffs the clothes she is wearing full of pillows and clothing, so she looks kinda like the Michelin Man. She was always horridly embarrassed by this and hides when she is doing this. We give her privacy and pretend like we don't know about it because she doesn't like us to know about it. LOL She seemed to prefer that over any vest or blanket. I thought the blanket would save her from the embarrassment she feels, but apparently, it doesn't give her what she needs.
The pvc beads are more expensive than rice, but are washable.
My DS didn't really care for the vest he had at school so my DH came up with an alternative. I bought drapery weight and sewed it into the hem of his t-shirts. The drapery weights are like a beaded cord wrapped in a knitted material. I opened up the hem just a bit and threaded the weights through with a safety pin, then sew it shut. It adds a few ounces to his shirt and he doesn't really notice it.

Stay far away from the lead aprons. You don't want to risk lead poisioning.

I made Weston (now 10, 5th grade) a weighted vest. The first one was just a child sized fishing vest w/ lead free fishing weights in the pockets-- just removed the packets of weights to wash. This one worked ok, he wore it some in 2nd grade (but his teacher complained of him clinking the weights together). I also made him a longer version w/ pockets all along the hem and put the weight packets in those-- it was ok, but he decided he didn't love wearing it-- instead he prefers to wear underarmor underwear now, that hugs him instead of weighting him.

yes and no...my mother is making one for my son for Christmas. She is using the weighted string stuff they use in curtains. my son wraps up tight in his blankets anyways so this will just help...we call him the nummy sleeper cause he is wrapped all the way from head to toe with his nose stivking out.....not to strange ooking on a younger kid but my son is 13......lol
