It sounds like the boys both did great overall. They were waaaay out of their routines and comfort zones and yes, there were a few hiccups and misunderstandings, but they handled everything very well.
I agree with Alexis that "mental pain" is a good description for what Chris is probably feeling: overwhelmed, confused, out of his own element and routine and probably a little shy. Hey, I wouldn't have had the vocabulary to express all of that at 11. I don't think I could even have managed "mental pain" as a description back then, so it is awesome that he can put some kind of voice on his feelings and communicate them to an adult.
Speaking of adults, I read what your MIL said/did and I could have cheerfully smacked her for you. Where does she live? ;)
