ADHD that is. We have been getting services (in home) for about a month solid now. My behavioral consult mentiong how scattered Adam is. I jokingly said "yeah, I swear he has adhd too" and she agreed wit me!!!!!

SO my appointment is for July 25th. In my heart I DO think there are traits of ADHD showing but not confirmed.
I really dont' love the idea of medication my child who will only be 4 next Tuesday.
I want what's best and this COULD be the missing piece of what makes Adam tick.

Needless to say, he is doing really good. A meltdown here and there but over all ok.

His bday party is next week................CARZ
All his echoing now is "Speed, I am speed" "Forty loosers, one winner"!!!!!!!!!!
I do enjoy this movie too so I don't car.
About 10 kids all different ages and total with parents will be aobut 25

Pray for nice weather, I dropped $100 on outside stuff for the kids to play with and we have a new wooden swingset just put in.

Talk to you gals soon in chat. I miss all of you. I have been helping my dad settle my aunt's estate who died a 2 wks ago---80 years of stuff we are going through.........

Love ya

You know no matter what happens it really isn't the end of the world. Liam's first dx was adhd, then bp, then ASD, mood disorder and adhd. I fought the adhd dx for so long, and this year realized I was fighting no one but myself.

The reality is, when on the adhd med (focalin) he has such a better day and is more confident. Remember AS/ASD kids often are comorbid with adhd or a mood disorder; just goes with the territory I'm afraid.

Who is the appt with? A dev ped/neuro psych or just your reg ped? I ask as this can really affect the dx and whether it is worth taking seriously or not. Also if the dx does occur and you do decide to go the way of medication, remember there are many adhd meds out there and some fit kids better than others. eg: Liam tried ritilin, adderall xr and focalin xr before we found the right med, (the latter). We still tweak dosages from time to time.

ROFLMAO about CARS; Cian's birthday party theme too; his all time fave movie and toys....."The checkered flag is MINE!"

Hi Nora!
I agree with Dee as well. Nick's first dx was ADHD and the Asperger's came after that! I also agree with having the dx come from someone very knowledgeble about ADHD. The dx can be very subjective and what one person can consider ADHD, another may think is just normal kid behavior. We had Nick seen by a dev ped for both dx's. Our reg ped just poo-poo'd our concerns, however, there are some peds out there that are very knowledgeble in this so obviously use your judgement!

One note, go with your gut if you decide to start meds. We started Nick on Adderall XR, 5 mg, lowest dose and he was very moody, emotional, etc. Adderall is one of the stronger stims, works great for some kids, just didnt work good for him. We switched to Metadate CD (Ritalin) and had excellent results. Both are the extended release capsules which we opened and sprinkled in applesauce. There will be a couple of days as he gets used to the med, but anything after that, if you feel it isnt right, let your doc know. After a week, Nick still wasnt right and it only got worse and I took him right off the Adderall. He was right back to normal. Once you find the right med, it can make all the difference in the ability to focus, the hyperactivity and impulsivity. It can be frustrating though getting to that point, but our doc assured us that the trial and error doesnt leave any lasting effects with the meds.

Good luck to you both!!

Nora,

I would be a little bit cautious, especially if they are going to use the Connors rating and nothing else.

Paula
Adam was getting OT 2x per week outpatient and just graduated 2 wks ago.
He is getting evaled from my WrapAround service (in home aide and behavioral consult services). It's an actual psych doc.
I have felt this in my heart for a LONG time.
I feel that it will be a chapter I need closed since our whole dx last April.

I am NOT one bit nervous.

I'll keep ya updated.
My only area of concern IF the do dx him ADHD, and meds are a course of action what kind of long term effect will this have.

I can help you there a bit; my cousin (now 19) was dx with adhd when he was 10 and did well on ritilin, then came the dx of ASD at age 12 (although I saw something much earlier, but I was in my teens and every one poo poohed me...sigh). Anyway, he has been on ritilin for almost 10 years now and so far has had no short term or long term side effects. As he has aged, he is easier to be around and although his Aspieness is self evident, you can tell the days he has taken his meds from the days he hasn't. (manic talking, irtritable v's calmer, engaged, focused).

I would hope that Liam would not need his adhd med by age 19 as I know many kids outgrow the need by then, but my cousin just still needs it. The nice thing about adhd meds is the short half life; it's out of teh sytem awfully fast (like 6-12 hour).

If you do go the med route, journal what you see. Ritilin gave Liam seizures, adderall xr made him irritable, but focalin is a great fit for him, (and remember straight ritilin fits my cousin the best there)----all kids are built differently.

(((Hugs)))

Nora,

I didnt; mean to inply that you shouldn't have him tested or that you shouldn't follow you gut.

You definitely should. I just wanted to caution you on some of the risks, that's all.
