Went to NIH this week....got diagnosis..

We went this past Tuesday to NIH to do Tony's portion of the diagnostics (I went last week for a 5 hour parent interview) to determine if he has autism or a spectrum disorder.

Hi there,
sending hugs. I know this must have been a very stressful day for you and you could use some. How are you doing with all the information? I remember it hitting me hard even though I was expecting it.
I never heard of an autism study with a lumbar puncture. My understanding is those are pretty darn painful. What kind of study is it? Will your son benefit from it? Will they use anesthesia so he won't be in pain?
My dd (13) has to go for an MRI pretty soon here and that is making me a bit nervous. she won't be put under and I am a bit afraid she will get real nervous in that loud tube. I worry about her being put under as well. I sat with 2 of my kids when they were for various things and it is very creepy.
Good luck with all this. Being a special needs mom seems to be one decision after another sometimes.

Thank you Christina, because my stomache turned too and I didn't know how to say it like you did.
Please please don't go there with your son.
Ginny,
Well now you know. It can be a kcik in the teeth to get a DX like this, but at least you are over the "questioning" phase and you can move on the "action" phase. There will be an adjustment. There always is. Please feel free to come here to vent and cry as much as you need to.
I have to ditto what the others say. I would run a mile from anyone offering to punch a hole into my child's spinal canal for the sake of a "study". I'm sorry, but I would not put that kind of risk on him. MRI's and EEGs are

Thank you all for your kind words and suggestions.
Hi Ginny. We were hit hard by our son's diagnosis too since we knew he was different but we really weren't thinking anything on the spectrum (except in the dark recess of my mind where I could reason it away).
Thank you all for your input.
