Thanks for sharing that. I wonder if Tony Atwood has some tapes of his conferences. I would really like to see that.
Interesting about the middle school years. I have always referred to that age as the black hole of adolescence, LOL! I have definitely been thinking about homeschooling through middle school. I didn't learn a blessed thing at school socially, and I don't think it's easy to focus on classwork with all the goofyness socially.
Also interesting about homework. I tend to agree, unfortunately, our school district is mega big on homework. I have mixed feelings about it. I do think it teaches good study habits, which I didn't have until well into high school, and we didn't have much homework when I was in school. My parents did no helping with projects, either, and I am right there helping with homework. The one thing my parents did right was get me an algebra tutor, and if there is ever anything my kids are having trouble with that I can't help with, I'll be sure and get a tutor. I think 30 min homework is not unreasonable. 2 hours? Too much.
I know what you mean about wanting to be perfect, and Duncan won't try things sometimes because he is so sensitive to judgment. He says, "I'm not good at that, you do it." It takes a lot of encouragement and round-about ways to get him to try things.
Whenever you get around to it, I'd be interested in those websites! Although, don't worry if you don't get to it, I'll google it, LOL!

Thanks for sharing! I hope I get to see him some day. My ds is going to middle school next yr (gulp). I'm definately keeping homeschool in the back of my mind as an option.

How neat, glad you got to go. How much does it cost, anyway?
I was homeschooled from fourth grade through graduation, and I wish that I had been homeschooled sooner! Kids are mean at any age. I have AS, BTW. My three year old daughter also appears to have AS and I intend on homeschooling her (and her siblings.)
I am a member of the yahoogroup aslearningathome, for homeschool families of spectrum kids. We have a few who don't homeschool yet but are considering it. You might like to join!

Interesting,
Thank you for telling us about it. I know he was here I think on the 19th. I didn't go though I would like to see him someday just out of curiousity.
I am actually not a huge fan of Sir Tony, lol. I tend to sometimes disagree with some of his stuff though not all. He has some definite good points too. I kind of think he is sort of like the Dr. Phil of the AS world. He has lots of ideas and such but not a whole lot of research. Too pop culture icon for me I guess.
Now if it was Eric Corschene, Margaret Bauman, Catherine Lord or a number of others I would be there in a heart beat.
As for the language delay, I think that is still up for debate. I don't think they have a clear picture yet of what AS is in comparison to ASD. It will be interesting to see what they decide to put in the next DSM about that. Honest I am not sure we can just go totally on Hans Aspergers papers. He was the first to discover and describe these kids but we have learned so much more about aspergers syndrome and autism since then. It is really just named after him.
Hans Asperger and Leo Kanner both made similar discoveries at the same time while in completely different countries. After the fact we have made the distinction between the 2 disorders saying that Kanner tended to discribe the more classic type autistics, while Asperger described the more verbose little professor type. However, they only studied a few kids. We all know that each person with autism is different, sometimes vastly so. So it is therefor possible that they were looking at the same thing.
All very interesting though.

Tina,
He is someone I would like to see speak.....I bet it was interesting. I personally like his book - I think it is a good intro/starter book - gives the basics and is an easy read.
