What are your child's obsessions?

Maybe you've done this before but I thought it would be interesting to talk about our kids obsessions.

My son loves animals. He knows so much about animals and dinosaurs, it's amazing. He loves Animal Planet and animal shows. Also, he loves his stuffed animals. He has quite a collection and always wants more. I buy cheap little stuffed animals and use them as rewards for him completing a workbook. It's about the only way I can get him to do one. He does have other interests as well, but animals take up most of his thinking. He even pretends to be an animal quite often. He will tell me, "Mom, I am a house cat named Snoopy who is black and white and he's yours."

My Mikey looks like my dad too. I adore all 4 of my kids but that puts him in kind of a special place in my heart. I adored my dad and he passed a number of years ago. Cait looks like her grandma (DH's mom). Maybe it is a special thing god does for our special kids.

Welcome, Debbie! My son is 8, and he HAS to bring a toy everywhere we go. I've long since given up on that battle, because it can't be won. DH and I just relax and have a cup of tea, while he scrounges up some Bionicle guy and gives him a new head or something, just to bring in the car. It's almost always a built-up thing, like Legos, Bionicles, and occasionally a soft toy. We can NOT go ANYWHERE in the car without a toy, and a predetermined one MUST be in the car when I pick him up from school. A toy also has to sit on the counter during toothbrushing time.

Unfortunately, the 4.5 year old has started doing it, but to a lesser extent. I don't think he's got AS; I think he's just doing what his role-model/hero is doing.

Anyway, welcome to the board. Glad to have you here.

Hi Debbie and welcome. I'm fairly new here.....older son diagnosed in December 2005.....I never even heard the word Aspergers until October 2005......so I have LOTS to learn and this is a great place to do it. The ladies here are so nice, supportive and knowledgeable.....

Again, welcome

Forever, Liam was obsessed with Thomas and all things train, then it switched to Star Wars in Dec 2004.

Hi Christie, and thanks for the welcome!

I know what you mean about not knowing anything about Asperger's.

ROFL! Thanks, I am fond of him.

Would look really typical except the cast came from an autistic misunderstanding with peers on the playground. Ended up with a broken thumb in the deal but hey, it was only on for 3 weeks and we got to decorate it with a Harry Potter Theme (current obsession. Red for Gryffndor, there is a wing you see there for hedwig, lol. I think the skull was from the openning on the new movie but they aren't mentioned in the movie. On the other side of the case is a Firebolt and a golden snitch.

Here is a picture with the crew! I just can't resist, sorry. http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v714/FMichaels/?action=view&current=IMG_0133.jpg

Debbie,

Well, it's not so much that it takes him forever to decide, but he has to PREPARE things. He has to build things, or gather up a certain group of things, or simply find them. The main thing is that he HAS to do it. You can't "make him" not do it. If he decides he needs to build a little snow-speeder for Johnny Thunder to ride on, and it's time for school, or bedtime, or dinner...you can NOT make him stop. On some days, when everything is going well, he might say, "Hey, I have a great idea! I'll take Green Patch instead. Okay, I'm ready to go." Those days come in phases. Last year, we were getting nasty letters from the school because of his habitual tardiness. He'd get it in his head that he had to bring Tahu Nuva in the car, but Tahu Nuva's kanoka mask couldn't be found anywhere...so we'd have to look around for it until we found it, or until, after many, many tears, he gave up in absolute despair.

This year, he gets an idea for a story he wants to write or a picture he wants to draw--at 10 pm. He can NOT relax until he has completed it.

When he was younger, like four, his thing was monologues. He HAD to tell you the entire plot of a Pajama Sam computer game from beginning to end (and leap around the room while telling you) and you could NOT leave or try to change the subject. We didn't know about AS, back then, and really had no idea what was up with him.

Evelyn

Oh, man, I tried to make this be right under Debbie's post to me, but it looks like that didn't happen. Grrr. Oh well. :)
