What are your child's obsessions?

Maybe you've done this before but I thought it would be interesting to talk about our kids obsessions.

My son loves animals. He knows so much about animals and dinosaurs, it's amazing. He loves Animal Planet and animal shows. Also, he loves his stuffed animals. He has quite a collection and always wants more. I buy cheap little stuffed animals and use them as rewards for him completing a workbook. It's about the only way I can get him to do one. He does have other interests as well, but animals take up most of his thinking. He even pretends to be an animal quite often. He will tell me, "Mom, I am a house cat named Snoopy who is black and white and he's yours."

Thanks for your repost back Evelyn. I understand.

If we are going somewhere, Stephanie has to have a certain thing and has to look around until she gets it. If she can't find it, she kind of gets stubborn and a bit angry and insists she gets it or we can't go. We have to talk her into something else then she gets moving. But it is a struggle every time.

Stephanie is kind of like that. When she gets an idea to do something, she has to! She can be so insistent.

Wow, that's tough when you can't shut him down and you can't change the subject. Steph can get like that too sometimes. I can't go on with her lessons until she gets off her mind, whatever is on her mind. I hate to stop when I am explaining something, but she interrupts quite a bit with what she is thinking and I have to start over. If I insist in having my way and keep explaining, she won't listen. But if she keeps interrupting, I am not sure she'll get the whole idea of the lesson either. It's tough.

I wish you the best.

Ian is outgrowing his obsessions and his interests are becoming more varied and diverse. When someone other than me finally began to see ASD it was because he was totally obsessed with trains. When he was in a bad mood we could pop in a video of the history of the railroad and he would watch it for hours. He could talk about the different engines, the cars, steam engines and diesels, and matriculated something or other. His vocabulary was enormous, honestly, and he seemed to understand what he was talking about, especially for a three year old. My mom got the biggest kick out of watching him sing to Thomas's Trackside Tunes. It really was priceless. He went as Gordon for three years in a row at Halloween. We had to copy Gordon's face, print it on our printer and superimpose it over Thomas's face on the costume.

Later he got into Battlebots and Robotica. I don't know if anyone else's kids watched that show, but one of Frank Zappa's kids (I can't remember his name and it's gonna drive me nuts!) was an announcer. People built these robots and they went over obstacles and battled each other. Universities were involved in Battlebots, I think. Anyway, that went on for about a year -- a total nerd fest that we all LOVED!

Then there was Transformers, which was shorter lived, then Yu-gi-oh, then those spinning tops -- can't think of the name right off the bat. He still loves Japanamation cartoons. Then Battle B-Daman.

Duncan's obsession is much less intense. He loves legos, video games, and cats. He went as a black cat for Halloween last year. Sometimes he pretends he's a cat, too. He tells me he's in "cat mode." He is hillarious. He also loves acquarium fish. He has an acquarium in his room and loves the video game "Insanaquarium" which I highly recommend. I think it's very educational in that you have to feed and maintain the fish in the acquarium or they die, and they poop money and pearls so you can accumulate the money and buy better food, more food, more fish, etc. It has really neat graphics, too.

Doh! Were we talking about our KIDS' obsessions??? Sorry I forgot! I like Insanaquarium, too, LOL!

Yep, Beyblades. I just thought of that this afternoon. Launchers, battle beasts, I remembered all that, why couldn't I remember the name of the dang tops!

In some ways I really miss Ian's obsessions. His interests are so diverse now, which is a really good thing, but I really miss all his expertise on trains. He seems to have forgotten some of that knowledge. Maybe he didn't really understand it, but memorized the facts.

Tina......my second son, Jack, is almost 2 and he has no obsessions so far......he doesn't watch TV (or videos or DVDs), he likes playing with a variety of toys (I rotate them so he doesn't get bored).....unlike his brother who at 2 was already into trains.....trains, trains and more trains......he still likes his trains but he also likes animals......so we get to see a lot of animal planet or discovery channel around here.....nice break from trains.

We don't have any girls here (besides me) - even the dog and cat are boys - so I have no comparison.....

Do you mean girls and boys in general, or girl and boy Aspies?

My girl ASer was into obsession earlier and more significantly than her AS brother. Her first word was dog, animals have been her one and only obsession ever and she has very much the typical Aspie all consuming obsession about it. Yesterday my 6yo nephew was saying a joke "What do you call a dog with no tail?" Cait blurted out "An Australian Shepard".

Mike's come and go. He definitely is rigid about things and gets into obsessions but they change over time though they are within a theme. He also has 2 interest areas, building toys (lego mainly) and electronics.

As far as NT's go, I can't say. Even Dave has that Aspie boy obsessive interest type thing. Again, building things, swords, and electronics. The kid has every Star Wars lightsaber I think that he has purchased with his own trade in money.

Emily is my only true NT. She has never had an obsessive interest though she does get into things she enjoys. Currently it is cooking and sports.
