Hi,

I have an 11 yr old DS with PDD. He has learning disabilities, along with speech and language delays/difficulties. He is in sort of an inclusion class with his own aid. My problem is this....he is not reading/writing anywhere near grade level yet his teachers require weekly book reports, summaries and presentations of these things in front of the class. He is MORTIFIED....and embarrassed by the fact he cannot get his thoughts together and that people have difficulty understanding him. He says the "typical" kids call him a dueffess...of course not during the presentation. What do I do??? Do I tell the teachers not to make him get infront of the class? I sort of feel as if it were like making a physically disabled child....dance in front of the class. Any thoughts? Thanks!

You should talk to the teacher. Does the teacher know how he feels? Maybe if she knows how he really feels, she can either make accomidations for him, or make him feel more comfortable doing it.

Personally I think if it is causing him anguish, something has to change.

Hi,

Thank you for your thoughts! Yes, he does have an IEP and I have told his teachers how he feels...they've brushed it off. He gets speech 3 times a week, perhaps I should consult his speech teacher? The problem lies with his speech impairment, along with his inability to form coherent sentences when he needs to explain something. He has trouble retaining information as well as retrieving it. I just feel so bad for him because as I said earlier.....the only thing I can compare it to.... is making a physically disabled child dance in front of the class. Thanks!
