What school does your child attend?

I was wondering how many ASD kids attend general ed, how many go to a learning center, and who is mostly in general ed with some help? I always assumed that after a couple of years in the special needs preschool program that Gray could go mainstreamed, but I'm thinking that might be high hopes. His preschool teacher who has dealt with children with Autism for a long time has mentioned that lots of kids go to a learning center instead of regular school. I was wondering where your children go? Thanks!

Hi. My son is home schooled currently. He was never in a mainstream class, but then we live in NYC where public school special ed programming is really poor, so we never seriously considered it! These past few years, while home schooling, we have looked at every option possible, including CTT (inclusion) rooms and private schools, here the good programming is over-full with waiting lists, so no luck. And ds does have behavioral challenges, so many programs are wary of taking him as well.
Our son is 10 years old, PDD-NOS and high-sensory and stubborn. If he gets upset, he has a very loud voice, and he is not necessarily easily led out of the room to calm down, if he feels he is in the right. Before being home schooled, he was in private special needs schools, but we found the academics and social challenges to be way too easy for him at one school, and the behavioral mod program at another school was too poorly implemented.
Home for now has been a strong choice, although I am always grateful that he spent those earlier years in school where he learned strong work ethics and got a good head start on school skills, therefore he is easy to teach now for Mom and Dad, whew! And our ds has lots of friends and activities, now we are accessing the home schooling community, such as classes and participating in a recent production of "into the Woods" as an actor.
I always had it in the back of my mind that we might home school for middle school, I just never though that by middle school, we'd already have 2 years of home schooling under our belts!
And do I think Malcolm will go to college? I think it's likely. Of course, he thinks college sounds boring and working at MacDonalds sounds like fun lol. Do I think Malcolm will hold down a job, be independent? I think that's likely, too. But as other have pointed out, there are just no guarantees, so we consider all options when we think about what might need to happen in the future.
yours,
Sara
Hi Lucinda,
My ds (AS, severe anxiety, 9) was in a regular ed preschool which was disastrous, then was switched to a sped/inclusion preschool with an awesome teacher. He was in regular ed kindy and then we attempted reg. ed 1st grade and it was horrible. I fought the school and got him into a self contained PDD classroom. He is mainstreamed for specials (art, gym etc.) & one class which is currently science. He has really thrived in this room. He's got multiple supports and I'm really thrilled with his teachers.
Btw, you look so much like Billy's speech therapist. It's amazing. You could be twins. I wish I had a picture of her to show you.

OMG Renee, you are good. If I asked my son as to how his day was - he would say "greate!!!' Later I will find out that he has been to principle's office twice etc..
Sara,
Anandhi,
Mike does the same thing (Cait to but not to his extent).
What I found was that Mike answered how his day was based on how he felt that moment I picked him up. It's like he couldn't relate the whole day or process it. Our guys are also quick to forgive and forget sometimes.
I remember a day last year when I went to pick him up from school. Mike got in the car and told me what a great day he had. He was laughing with some kid at the end of the day. Well I open his backpack and find a "citizenship report" which means he was sent to the principals office and was in big trouble. He also had a pink slip and a long note from his teacher on this huge problem/meltdown earlier in the day. I swear I think Mike had completely forgot. Citizenship reports used to be a regular occurance but last year that was his only one. It was surreal. It was like there were 2 separate Mike's having 2 different days.
He has always done that though. How ever he is feeling at the moment I see him is how he explains his day. I have to play the 20 question inquisitor to get correct info.
