I'm just curious how many of us, in our therapy sessions & doc appts, have found things our children do...in us?

I've been thinking about this a lot lately, especially with my DD about to start preschool. Over the past year, I've started to realize I might have some "spectrumish" characteristics...

DD and I are both visual learners. When I was younger I had a semi-photographic memory and I believe my DD does too. She has tremendous recall ability for objects and small details. I am the same. We both seem to be able to understand/do certain things way above age level but are completely deficient in other areas.

DD and I both have sporadic attention spans. Although she is more hyper than I am, we both seem to have intense moments or concentration during certain activities mixed with a complete inabitlity to stay on track. We both apparently have an affinity for puzzles and music.

We are both left-handed which lends itself to all sorts of fine motor issues. I still have trouble folding things and cutting with scissors. At least I will be able to teach her how to adapt to a right-handed world. My parents were both righties, so it took me longer to learn.

We both have sensory issues. She is a sensory seeker while I have a lot of tactile defensiveness issues.

According to my mother, DD looks just like I did at her age. She also has a lot of the same mannerisms. I found a picture of myself at her age and the resemblance is amazing. These days I call her "mini-me."

We are both extremely social but have problems with apropriateness. I have always felt awkward in social situations, yet I crave the interaction with others. DD is way over the top, has no personal space boundaries and no stranger anxiety.

I have never really been good with eye contact. I need to constantly remind myself to look at others when talking and listening to them.

Oh yeah...she has my temper!

I'm sure there are many more shared traits that I can't think of right now. DD is also very much like her father. She has his sense of humor and independence. I've actually been asked by more than one person if DH could be an un dx'd Aspie. So maybe her issues are inherited from of both of us.

Long story short... I have so many traits in common with my kids that I've had myself eval'd THREE TIMES. So far no go. I have ADD, SI, and a gastrointestenal disorder... but no autism.

And I'm pretty sure Renee disagrees with all of them experts who say I'm not on the spectrum.

Yes, but all the BESTEST folks are on the spectrum, honest!

There are some traits I share but DH shares many many many more, he just won't admit it.

Here is the thing, I am finding the longer I am in this life the more traits I get. I think it is catchy. I used to be able to hold my own at parties, had lots of friends, and now I feel like a social misfit most of the time and unless it is an ASD type event I am completely out of my element. Oh and I have noticed that I have started to have trouble with eye contact in the past few years. That was NOT an issue before. Geez!
