I'm just wondering what the signs were that led you to get a diagnosis and at what age?

My daughter wasn't diagnosed with AS until she was 9. She was always a very sensitive and difficult child. Very set in her ways and thoughts. In school, the teachers would always tell me that her biggest problem was not being able to stay on topic. They would ask her a question and her answer would be completely unrelated. They could ask her what day of the week it is and she would respond with a lengthy speech about Pokemon. Any little change would spark major tantrums too.

Over the past three years, we have seen worsening behaviors. Difficulty getting along with other kids, facial grimaces, still unable to stay on topic, "obsessed" with a particular subject (usually pokemon), constant talking... and talking loud and fast. So many things really.

She was falling apart in school in the 3rd grade and could no longer function at school at all. She drew pictures of herself with an exploding volcano in her head and said that this was what she felt like all the time. Actually very intuitive now that I look back on it.

Anyway, we were finally able to get a diagnosis and things are so much better. I was able to learn more and make adjustments to my parenting style to better suit her needs. Now things are so much more relaxed at home and she is functioning very well at school again. WHEW!!

IMO You have enough red flags there, that says your mommy gut knows what it's talking about.

Well just to let you know, sometimes you can get docs who just don't know what the heck is going on.....

I went to our first doc, he said Autistic Traits.... I went to Stanford and he said that since he didn't perservate on light posts or shower heads, then he wasn't on the spectrum.

Regional Center is california specific. It looks like you are in Pennsyvania? I would go with the intermediary unit that Tina was talking about.
