When and if your child rages.....
| Mon, 03-12-2007 - 1:40am |
Whats the cause? Is there a cause? Is there something that you notice triggers this?
My son is raging right now. Tony and I are taking turns as it goes on for hours sometimes. I am a nervous wreck.
His rage is over his latest food obsession, Bread, spread with butter and garlic, toasted on the grill.
He has had this rage since 10:25 and its now 10:40. I gave him his melantonin at 9:30, and he has done the opposite of being tired.
It didn't help as his younger brother also had another fit going to bed, with the same intensity, lasting for a half an hour....
Sigh, now going to take my turn. My son is doing grunt noises, and completly out of control....
Bye....

He grabbed a shoe and hit a picture on the wall. The glass shattered and hit the stairs. I think it scared him as now he is into bed, but when I go in to check on him he keeps on mentioning the garlic bread....
We vacummed up the glass, and threw away the picture frame, but god, this was so hard to take.
You think this might be bi-polar as the doc suggests, or just an ASD episode?????
What do your kids rage about? He used to rage about change and transistions.... he still will about transitions but acts more scared when it happens.... not angry like this....
and now it seems over obsessions like ocd with his eating. He has to have what he wants when it comes to food, and his eating is so different that normal kids. Or he will perservere on something like a gameshark... and will insist we go buy it, and I have to say no, and then he will flip out, start kicking the walls around him and then start banging his head.... He bangs his head quite a bit...

I can tell you what we deal with and it may give you some incite as o why he rages. The joy of having a child is comorbid is trying to figure out what was the mood disorder (bp etc), what was ASD and what was just being 6 years old!! Liam actually used to rage all the time up to last Summer. It was always eggshells. His first dx was bp-nos and we'd tied all sorts of meds but nothing really worked. After the asd dx last Fall and once correct classroom accommodations were in place, the rages lessened but did not truly disappear. We tried the final ed (risperdal) and it really has helped him.
As to your initial question; what sets Liam's rage off is usually an asd trigger; ie: hs current perserveration. With you its food, with us it's a dvd he wants or an expectation of one on one play (something he craves 24/7.) On Friday Liam lost it big time over his belief that his brother HAD to play a Star Wars scene out with him. He tried to break a picture (I caught it in time), kicked the wall and then hid behind the mini fridge grunting and roaring.
I t was hard as interests has been a few months since an episode like this. I think Spring is here and this is often his manic stage (now through Fall). his interests are far too sedentary and he needs to get out and run or swing to get himself centered (always a struggle).
Up to 30 % of asd's also have a mood disorder (more often anxiety or depression), but bp is not uncommon. I would start to journal his moods and perserverations (food etc) and see if there is a pattern. Check for duration too, an adhd rage is different in length from a bp one and asd ones are often so unique to the child it's hard to know where they fit, hence the confusion when dx our kids. I would hazard a guess that your ds is dealing with some considerable anxiety seen in his ocd behavior. It's so important you get the correct help for him if you go the way of meds as the wrong dx can mean the wrong med and an exacerbation of the problem. I know many bp kids cannot take stimulants (asd kids too for that matter), it triggers mania, and some AD's can trigger worse depression. If you are truly worried about possible bp I'd recommend The Bipolar Child by the Papoloses. It's a fantastic source for all things in that nature, and it may give you more incite or alleviate your fears on the mood disorder possibility.

It sounds like you guys are having a rough time.
OMG Evelyn, the yogurt story, I could understand every bit of that. Chris often times thinks something, and doesn't realize I can't read his mind.... And having to have things out in that order, its just Chris you know?
Can I ask you guys, after when their calm, do they remember the episodes? This morning when he got up he was going downstairs and I said careful, I have to go over the stairs again with the vacuum cleaner. He just looked at me oddly. I said Chris, do you remember last night and how you smashed the Frame on the wall with a shoe????
He said no, I said you don't remember blah blah blah? He said huh? He said all he remembers is wanting garlic bread and his dish network card back.
???? I don't understand how he cannot remember a horrible night like last night?

Oh, I feel your pain!

What a stinky night!
Well I can confirm the post swim bath thing. He is NOT a fan of that, lol.
Actually all the kids did very very well (well with the exception of mike having the occasional moment, but it was still good for him!)

Its a much better night tonite so knock on wood lol. He ate too many garlic toasts this evening and ended up throwing them up lol. I don't mean to laugh, but I'm hoping this might get him outta this darn garlic toast thing that is driving me crazy lolololol.
Wish me luck lol

I have to admit, I don't think I ever tried to find out if he remembered these episodes.
