Will NOT take anti-biotics

Need help. . . my almost 5 yo (PDD-NOS) has a bad ear infection. Went to doctor today and we got augmenten/amoxicillin. In the past we hid the meds in his vanilla milk but now he doesn't drink that anymore because he decided he didn't like the texture. We gave him a dose this morning and followed it with apple juice. He gagged a bit but got most of it down. Now tonight second dose I put in strawberry yogurt. As soon as it went in it came out. We have tried and tried(w/juice w/milk) and he will not take it.
What can we do? Of course it is after doctors hours now and i can't call til morning.

Have you considered mixing it in about 6 oz. of soda? I know, I know...soda is the root of all evil, but for our DD who has severe issues with food textures, smells, tastes, etc., soda is only thing that we can mix her meds in. (And that liquid Zoloft is NASTY stuff!) I think the carbonation (sp?) makes the difference. With all those tiny bubbles providing sensory input, they don't notice the thickness of the syrupy medicine so much. Does that make any sense at all?
Be sure to shake it up really good, put it in a cup that he can't see into and use a straw. Straws typically allow the fluid to bypass the front and middle parts of the tongue, and therefore, provide fewer opportunities for gagging, etc.
Good Luck. We've been there, done that a million times. It's no fun at all!!!

Molly,
This is a tough one, especially if he is a gagger.

WOO HOO thank you Amy. It worked. Now I have to go buy more soda. I only had one ginger ale in the fridge, we don't usually have soda. It was amazing! I just hope I can get him to do this for 9 more days. Only a mom on this board would know. Thank God for the moms on here.

Thanks very much Paula. I really think the empty stomach and no dairy is a great idea. My son had so many feeding issues previously that he can easily make himself gag and throw up. I had tried the cheek thing in the past but must not have done it right cause it all came back in my face(lol) it wasn't funny at the time. The soda worked but hope we can keep it working. No pill swallowing here. Maybe when he is 15?! He he.

Hey hey, god bless the inventor of soda!
Ya know, ya gotta go with what works and I know for my poor soda deprived children, a soda would make anything go down, lol. Glad it worked.

Great job! I was so worried I was gonna have to come in and say "Well with my son we tried everything, and we finally had to take him in to get a shot."
It was horrible btw, but he had to get it.
I'm so glad everything worked out fine. And I'm so glad my son is old enough to take pills now lol.
