My Dh was just like this-- took him a very long time to accept the Dx. But he's absolutely sure if fits now. I can remember the first day he used the 'A' word in reference to our son. I didn't want to make a big deal out of it-- but I was jumping for joy inside! Now he's as likely as I am to try to explain to other people how Weston ticks and why he acts like he does. He's also more able to put into words what Weston needs than I am. I just need him to handle the next IEP meeting and I'll be set! LOL!

I knew you guys have gone thru this with your men, and I know there are some that still have men that are having a hard time with it.

I wasnt' sure if Tony would ever get to the point where he accepts it, so this small baby step is a HUGE step in my life.

I'm wondering if I can get HIM to where the Autism Awareness shirt lol.

lainie,

It's funny, it was in March that Jim finally started to come around too. Peter had been DXed the previous October and Jim had totally blanked out all mention I made of the DX and what we should do about it. Then one March, I was looking up t-shirts on cafepress for Autism awareness month (April) and one made me LOL. DH looked over my shoulder and saw what I was doing. He watched me browse for a few minutes then stopped me, pointed at a shirt that said "I love someone with Autism" and asked me to order it for him.

Then he quietly left the room (right before I hit the floor).

Dads have a completely way of dealing with "stuff" (or not dealing with it sometimes). It all goes in there, percolates, and then one day they floor you with a gesture or an insight.

I'm glad he is finally getting it.

Tony JUST let the cat out the bag to his friends. Well with Adam turning 5 in July, it's obvious that's he's a little different. I try to book his meetings for when he can attend them with me. HE NEEDS TO SEE what us mom's go thru with our autim social life LOL
