WWYD? Ds broke his glasses again.

The aide called me a half hour ago and said ds bent his glasses. She was sitting right next to him and didn't see him do it. She asked him why and he said "I don't know I just did." She said he wasn't angry or upset about anything. She took him to the eye doctor across the street to see if they can bend them back. They think they will break if they do. I told them to try anyway. I'm waiting for a call back. I'm so mad at ds. This isn't the first time he's done this. At least this time its just the frames.
What would you do? Do I punish him? Make him pay for the frames. Let it go? I suspect he did this to get out of school. He can't function without his glasses.
Fuming,
Samantha

((((SAMANTHA)))) I don't know what I'd do. I do know that I'd be really ticked!
On the other hand, he's had such a rough time lately. It does seem like another way for him to get away from school-- and maybe he's he's still really not very happy, totally overwhelmed and it's all awfully hard for him.
I hope the glasses are fixable!

First of all major big {{{{{{{HUGS}}}}}}} . Boy have I been there done that. Victor is 10 and been wearing glasses since 5. After he broke his first two pairs, we thought we'd get slick and get him the bendable frames. HA! Supposedly unbreakable frames, are breakable, Victor did it. Finally, we gave up and just paid for the extra insurance on the frames as well as the lenses. What we do tho, now that he's older, is that he has to take them up to the clerk, and tell the clerk what happened and why they need fixing. He's admitted to the clerks (with us within earshot) that he's gotten frustrated and thrown them, that he was worried so he chewed the ear pieces, etc.. and it helps us help him because we got the typical "I dunno" response when asked point blank. This is a little way for him to take ownership of what happened and yet we still get to the route problem.
When he was young tho, we always bought a second pair ( the buy two for the price of one sales) and left the other pair with the teacher at school. This way there was no excuse to "but I can't see". He never knows where the second pair is because it's his "emergency" pair.
Like I said before, Victor is 10 and is STILL INCREDIBALLY hard on his frames, but now they are lil bends and screws popping loose because he wears them all day every day. DH is 35 and is just as hard on frames, so I expect to be going to contacts as soon as we determine he can be responsible for them. Long story short, in the ways of picking your battles, this just isn't one I was willing to fight.

Samantha,
I would probably come down pretty hard on him. Stressed or no: Glasses are expensive and breaking them to get out of class is just not OK.

I am so there with you. Sam wears glasses and I don't know how many pairs we have had to replace. Do you have a lenscrafters near you? They offer a one year breakage warranty that has saved me lots of money in the past.
I was the one that broke the last pair trying to bend them back myself and snap. All I had to pay was 24.00 to replace them.
Thanks everyone.
The eye glasses lady across from the school was able to bend them back but the frames are cracked and just holding togeather. I found online I can order the same frames so the lens will fit. We tried to see if Lens Crafter could just put the lens in new frames but they said no. We can't afford the whole shebang because they are no line progressive lens, big bucks! But just the frames online are $75. We are making ds pay us back with his allowance. He has about half already so all in all I'd say he's a lucky boy. He took it well at first but when he realized he may have to pay $500+ when Lens Crafters said we couldn't just get frames he was crying. I thought we were heading to melt down but he held it togeather. He'll be very relieved when I tell him this morning we can just get the frames.
