Are you kidding? The PE teacher is negligent. Thank GOD he is ok, but what if........... I hate thinking like that. Angels were watching over you to get to your son.
On Monday I would cause such a stink and LET IT BE KNOW that is NOT exceptable AT ALL. There is NO EXCUSE for her actions. She needs to be fired. I am sorry but she saw him leave and did nothing?????? Let your local news find out about this, and LOOK OUT.
((hugs)) 2 you and your son. Sending more angels to protect you
Wow, as the parent of a child who wanders without regard to safety, this is my absolute worst fear. People just don't have a CLUE what goes on with our spectrum kids, do they? Interestingly, the last time Claire had an issue with this, it was the PE teacher who tried to tell me her older brother and sister should be responsible for her. What's the deal with PE teachers???
I'd seriously push the issue...and if he doesn't have one already, I'd INSIST he get a 1:1 parapro to ensure his safety since, obviously, the regular staff isn't capable of keeping him safe. Maybe that's not the answer you're looking for...but somebody has to be in charge of keeping him safe. There's has to be a responsible party designated to help your son so nothing like this ever happens again.
We are having similar issues with one of Liam's spectrum classmates (also a friend). He is a wanderer, and bolter so his Mum had to bite the bullet and get a GPS tracking device on his ankle. Sounds drastic, but that was adrastic situation (he has jumped out of his bedroom window as recently as llast month).
As a trained teacher I am appalled at the PE teacher's actions; you send one of the more responsible students (or a pair of them) to get help from the office at break neck speed and then you take off after the fleeing student. My guess is the dope was stumped as she had a running boy and an un attended class if she went after him. Sounds like some teacher training wouldl benefit all here.
So glad he's well, and actually great that YOU were the one that found him,...he will remember that!
AAAAUUUUGGGGHHHH, what a nightmare. I would so be kicking up a great big ole mama grizzly bear fuss, calling an advocate or lawyer, going straight to the school board and district superintendent, getting the IEP changed to include a parapro, going ballistic on everyone. And not calling 911 RIGHT AWAY?!?! They are so, so liable and in trouble here, this school.
And yes, thanks heavens you found him alright and so relatively quickly. Still, so traumatic for him and you both.
